Chapter 9 - The Gavel of Absolute Restitution

Six months later, Courtroom 4B of the Cook County Circuit Court convened for the final criminal and civil sentencing.

Sitting in the front row of the gallery was myself, dressed in a sharp, immaculate midnight-navy power suit, holding Mr. Henderson’s hand.

Brandon, Adelaide, and Courtney sat at the defense table in bright orange state detention jumpsuits, their hands and feet bound in heavy iron transport chains. Their former arrogance, designer clothes, and vanity had been utterly pulverized by six months in solitary holding; Brandon was gaunt, his hair thinning, his eyes hollow.

Chief Judge Eleanor Sterling (no relation) took the bench with severe, uncompromising moral authority.

“Brandon Miller, Adelaide Miller, Courtney Miller,” Judge Sterling declared, her voice echoing through the silent stone chamber like rolling thunder. “You engaged in a calculated, depraved, and monstrous campaign of corporate embezzlement, identity theft, and domestic exploitation against a mother and newborn child.”

Judge Sterling brought down her heavy wooden gavel with a resounding crack that shook the courtroom.

“Brandon Miller is hereby sentenced to twelve years at the Stateville Correctional Center without the possibility of early parole.”

Brandon collapsed forward onto the table, sobbing in broken, hopeless gasps.

“Adelaide Miller is sentenced to seven years at the Logan Correctional Center for Women.”

“Courtney Miller is sentenced to five years at the Decatur Correctional Center, followed by mandatory financial forfeiture of all seized assets totaling $2,500,000.”

Judge Sterling struck the gavel a second time.

“The marriage between Elena Sterling and Brandon Miller is declared permanently dissolved ab initio, with sole, exclusive, unchallengeable legal and physical custody of Maya Sterling awarded to the mother.”

As the marshals hauled the three weeping convicts through the heavy iron holding door forever, I took a deep, pure breath of absolute peace.

Justice was complete, unshakeable, and eternal.
