Chapter 4 - The Neonatal Suite and the Black Security Detail

At 7:00 AM the following morning, the private maternity floor at St. Luke’s Memorial was quiet and bathed in warm autumn sunlight.
The door to my private suite opened.
Stepping inside was Arthur Henderson, my family’s chief legal counsel of twenty years, carrying a gold-embossed leather briefcase, flanked by Marcus Stone, Chief of Private Security for Sterling Global.
Beside them walked four broad-shouldered executive protection operatives in dark tailored suits, taking positions along the corridor.
“Good morning, Mrs. Miller,” Mr. Henderson smiled with deep, paternal warmth, bowing his head respectfully toward the bassinet. “And good morning to little Miss Maya.”
“Thank you, Arthur,” I smiled, sitting up in bed, feeling stronger with every passing hour. “How did the midnight audit progress?”
Julian Hayes, the senior forensic trial attorney, stepped forward from behind Marcus.
Julian laid three thick, red-stamped dossiers onto the rolling hospital table.
“Elena,” Julian began in a grave, measured tone. “What Brandon and his mother have been doing over the past fourteen months goes far beyond emotional cruelty and marital disrespect. It is calculated, multi-million-dollar grand larceny.”
Julian opened the primary folder, revealing dozens of certified banking discovery transcripts:
The Ghost Consulting Wires: Brandon had funneled $1,850,000 from the company’s operating accounts into a shell entity named Adelaide Heritage Holdings LLC, managed by his mother.
The Sister’s Luxury Trust: Courtney’s $450,000 European fashion boutique in downtown Chicago had been financed using falsified commercial loan guarantees backed by Elena's private inheritance.
The Forged Property Transfer: A quitclaim deed dated six weeks ago, attempting to transfer sole title of Elena’s $6 million lakefront estate in Lake Forest into Brandon’s personal name.

My jaw tightened into razor-sharp focus.
“They didn’t just abandon me last night, Arthur,” I murmured, my voice deadly calm. “They thought having a baby would leave me bedridden long enough to execute the final property seizure.”
