Chapter 5 - The Recovery of the Marine Shadow Box

While Victor rested peacefully under continuous naval monitoring, Colonel Marcus Stone—Victor’s former platoon commander from Desert Storm, now serving as Chief of Military Legal Intelligence—arrived at the Portsmouth VIP lounge.

Beside Colonel Stone walked Julian Hayes, the senior trial attorney for the Armed Forces Legal Defense Consortium.

Colonel Stone placed a polished walnut-and-glass display case onto the oak table.

Inside, pinned neatly against dark blue velvet, were Victor’s twenty-two years of honorable service:

The Silver Star with Combat 'V'.

Two Purple Hearts.

The Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Gold Star.

His master sergeant chevrons and gold jump wings.

"Where did you find them, Colonel?" I asked, running my fingertips over the glass.

"A pawn shop on Ocean View Avenue," Colonel Stone replied, his jaw tight with cold, military fury. "Evelyn sold her husband's Silver Star and Purple Hearts for four hundred and fifty dollars to buy three designer bikini sets and casino credits for the cruise."

Julian Hayes adjusted his glasses, opening a sealed red-stamped federal dossier.

"Under Title 18 of the United States Code, Section 704—the Stolen Valor and Military Medal Protection Act—the unauthorized sale, transfer, or commercialization of combat decorations constitutes a federal felony," Julian explained with razor precision.

"And what about the house?" I asked.

"The deed to the Norfolk property has been transferred 100% into the Victor & Maya Vance Living Trust," Julian confirmed. "Evelyn Vance has zero legal standing, zero tenancy rights, and zero claim to Victor's military pension."

Colonel Stone stepped forward, resting a hand over the shadow box.

"The cruise ship docks at the Port of Miami at 8:00 AM on Sunday, Maya," Colonel Stone said. "Let's go welcome your family home."
