Chapter 3 - The Secret One-Point-Four Million Dollar Trust

I turned the heavy gold ring toward the lamp light.
Engraved along the inner curve of the shank was a fine, microscopic alphanumeric sequence:
USMC-0302-VANCE-1994-T.
"Victor," I asked, sitting on the edge of the mattress, gently rubbing his cold arm. "What trust?"
Victor drew a slow, shallow breath.
"In 2004, after my second combat tour in Fallujah, my tactical logistics squad was awarded a share of an unencumbered maritime salvage endowment in Kuwait," Victor explained in his raspy, quiet voice. "When I returned to the States and married your mother, I knew she had a weakness for debt, luxury cards, and gambling. So I placed my entire $1.4 million military severance into an irrevocable blind trust managed by the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society and the Pentagon's Veteran Heritage Escrow."
A tear slipped from his sunken eye.
"Evelyn spent twenty years believing I lived exclusively on my monthly pension. She treated me like a broken tool because she thought I was penniless. She never knew that the deed to this four-bedroom house, the land in Virginia Beach, and that trust were registered solely in my name, with you as the exclusive contingent beneficiary."
Victor gripped my hand, his knuckles white.
"Call Colonel Marcus Stone at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Maya. Tell him Sergeant Major Victor Vance is calling in his final extraction."

I looked at the gold ring in my hand, feeling the sorrow in my heart transform into an impenetrable, diamond-hard resolve.
"Consider it done, Dad," I whispered.
