Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT ELENA STOPPED APOLOGIZING

My first hearing concerning Ryan's threats took place on a gray Tuesday morning.
I wore a navy dress and low heels.
Sophie sat beside me.
Rebecca stood nearby.
My hands trembled.
I hated that.
For years, I'd learned to recognize Ryan's moods.
When he smiled too widely, I knew he was angry.
When he spoke softly, I knew the argument wasn't over.
When he said he wanted to help, I waited for the price.
Now I was sitting in a courthouse preparing to describe what he'd done.
He entered wearing a charcoal suit.
For a moment, he looked like the man I'd once loved.
Neatly groomed.
Confident.
Charming.
Then his eyes found mine.
His expression changed.
He smiled.
Not kindly.
Knowingly.
As though he expected me to become frightened and apologize.
My stomach tightened.
Rebecca leaned closer.
"Elena, look at me."
I turned.
"You don't have to perform for him."
I swallowed.
She continued.
"Just answer honestly."
I nodded.
When it was my turn to speak, I described the demands for money.
The threats.
The incident at my apartment.
The messages involving Sophie.
The visit to the Moretti estate.
I didn't exaggerate.
Didn't claim things I couldn't prove.
I told the truth.
My voice shook at first.
Then steadied.
Ryan's attorney asked whether I'd voluntarily accepted financial help during our relationship.
"Yes."
"And you agreed to repay some expenses?"
"I signed a document Ryan presented."
"So you acknowledged a debt?"
I took a breath.
"I signed while under pressure. My attorney is investigating whether the claimed debt existed."
The attorney frowned.
"Miss Carter, did Mr. Mercer ever physically strike you?"
I looked at Ryan.
He smiled faintly.
I remembered the doorframe.
The painful fall.
The way he'd watched without helping.
"He grabbed my wrist when I tried to leave. I pulled away and was injured when I struck the doorframe."
The courtroom became quiet.
The attorney changed subjects.
Later, Rebecca presented the threatening messages and supporting documentation.
The court considered the evidence and issued protective conditions consistent with the findings.
Separate investigations into the financial exploitation allegations continued.
When we left the courthouse, my knees felt weak.
Sophie hugged me.
"You did it."
I shook my head.
"I almost cried."
She smiled.
"So?"
I laughed through tears.
She held me tighter.
"You told the truth."
For the first time, I realized I didn't have to sound fearless to be brave.
I only had to speak.
Outside, Alessandro waited near the courthouse steps.
He hadn't entered the hearing.
I'd told him I wanted to face it without his presence influencing the proceedings.
He respected that.
Now he stood beside Marco, holding a paper cup of coffee.
When he saw me, he approached slowly.
"Elena."
I smiled faintly.
"Hello."
"How did it go?"
I looked toward Sophie.
Then back at him.
"I told the truth."
His expression softened.
"Good."
I waited for him to ask whether Ryan was frightened.
Whether the court had humiliated him.
Whether I'd seen fear in his eyes.
Instead, Alessandro asked, "How do you feel?"
I considered the question.
For a moment, I couldn't answer.
Then I smiled through tears.
"Free."
Alessandro's eyes softened.
He nodded.
"Good."
Sophie looked between us.
Then smiled suspiciously.
"I should go meet my study group."
I stared.
"Sophie!"
She grinned.
"Very important exam preparation."
Then she hurried away.
Alessandro looked amused.
"She's subtle."
I laughed.
"Not remotely."
For a moment, we stood quietly.
Then he asked, "Would you like coffee?"
I looked at him.
"With you?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
He considered the question.
"Because I'd like to spend time with you somewhere that isn't my house or your workplace."
My heart stumbled.
I took a breath.
"Alessandro."
"I know."
He looked down.
"I'm your employer. The situation is complicated. And I don't want you to feel any pressure."
I studied him.
Then said quietly, "I'd like coffee."
His expression changed.
"Really?"
I smiled.
"Yes."
Then I raised a finger.
"But I'm paying for mine."
Alessandro laughed.
May you like
"Understood."
