Chapter 14 - THE MAN WHO LEARNED TO KNEEL

Alessandro proposed on an ordinary Sunday morning.

That was the part I loved most.

There was no grand ballroom.

No elaborate yacht.

No expensive restaurant filled with strangers watching.

Just my little yellow-curtained kitchen.

A plate of pancakes.

Two mugs of coffee.

And a man who'd somehow managed to burn the toast while preparing breakfast.

I stood beside the stove.

"Alessandro."

He looked up.

"Yes?"

"Is that smoke?"

He turned.

The toaster was producing a thin gray cloud.

He swore softly.

I burst out laughing.

"You're terrible at this."

He sighed.

"I manage a successful property investment company."

"Apparently toast is more complicated."

He laughed.

We opened a window.

Saved the pancakes.

And sat at the kitchen table.

For a while, we talked about ordinary things.

Sophie's new job.

Mrs. Bennett's retirement plans.

My upcoming professional training seminar.

The garden.

The weather.

Then Alessandro became quiet.

I looked up.

"What's wrong?"

He smiled faintly.

"Nothing."

"That's suspicious."

He laughed.

Then reached into his pocket.

My heart stopped.

"Alessandro?"

He stood.

Moved beside my chair.

And knelt on one knee.

I covered my mouth.

The man who once made powerful businessmen tremble was kneeling beside a kitchen table covered in pancake syrup.

His eyes were filled with tears.

"Elena Carter," he began, "the first time I noticed you were hurt, I thought I was seeing a problem I could solve."

My throat tightened.

He continued.

"I believed money, power, and security could fix almost anything."

He smiled sadly.

"But you taught me that people don't need someone to take control of their lives in order to be safe."

Tears slipped down my cheeks.

"You taught me to stop when someone steps away. To listen when they say no. And to understand that love doesn't create a debt."

He opened a small velvet box.

Inside was a delicate gold ring with a pale blue sapphire.

Simple.

Beautiful.

Chosen with care.

"I love your courage," Alessandro said. "Your kindness. The way you protect Sophie without trying to own her future."

His voice softened.

"And I love that you built a life for yourself, even after everything you survived."

I began crying harder.

He smiled through his own tears.

"I don't want you to marry me because I've helped you. I don't want gratitude to become obligation."

He took a breath.

"I want to marry you because I love the person you are, and because I want to keep earning the trust you've chosen to give me."

He held up the ring.

"Will you marry me?"

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

I thought of Ryan.

The apartment.

The bruised eye.

The threats.

The morning I stood trembling beneath the dining room chandelier.

Then I looked around my kitchen.

My home.

My choices.

My future.

And the man who'd never demanded that I surrender any of them.

I smiled.

"Yes."

Alessandro froze.

"Yes?"

I laughed through tears.

"Yes, you ridiculous man. I'll marry you."

He stood and pulled me gently into his arms.

I kissed him.

Then someone screamed outside.

We both jumped.

Sophie stood on the porch, looking through the window.

She was jumping up and down.

Mrs. Bennett stood beside her.

Marco was laughing.

I stared at Alessandro.

"You planned this?"

He smiled sheepishly.

"Possibly."

Sophie burst through the door.

"FINALLY!"

I started laughing.

Then crying.

Then laughing again.

Sophie hugged me so tightly I could barely breathe.

"You're happy?"

I nodded.

"So happy."

She looked toward Alessandro.

Then pointed a finger at him.

"Remember what I said."

He smiled.

"Treat your sister properly."

"Exactly."

He nodded solemnly.

"I intend to."

Mrs. Bennett wiped her eyes.

Marco pretended to inspect the ceiling.

And in the middle of my little kitchen, surrounded by people who loved me, I realized something wonderful.

I wasn't being rescued.

May you like

I was being celebrated.
