Chapter 1 - THE MAN WAITING OUTSIDE THE GATES

His Maid Hid a Black Eye — The Mafia Boss Noticed

The bruise had looked smaller in the bathroom mirror.\

Under the dining room chandelier, there was nowhere to hide it. Warm light settled over Elena Carter’s cheek, revealing the discoloration beneath the makeup she had applied before dawn.\

Twelve men sat around the mahogany table.\

None reached for his coffee.\

Alessandro Moretti stood beside his chair, watching the pot tremble between her hands.\

“Set it down.”\

Elena obeyed too quickly. The silver base struck its tray with a small, humiliating sound.\

“I walked into a cabinet, sir.”\

He did not look toward the other men. He did not smile at the explanation or demand she improve it.\

Instead, he took one step closer.\

Elena stepped back.\

He stopped immediately.\

That startled her more than his question.\

In eleven months working at the mansion outside Chicago, she had watched men twice her age fall silent when Alessandro entered a room. At thirty-six, he possessed the kind of wealth that opened doors and a reputation that made people cautious about what might wait behind them.\

Nobody interrupted him.\

Nobody told him no.\

Now he stood still because she had moved away.\

“Meeting’s over,” he said.\

A man near the windows cleared his throat.\

“We haven’t discussed the revised—”\

“Tomorrow.”\

Chairs moved across the floor. Papers disappeared into leather cases. The room emptied with an efficiency Elena usually admired and now found terrifying.\

She had disrupted something important.\

Important things belonged to people who could afford mistakes.\

She could not.\

“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “Please don’t fire me.”\

Alessandro looked at her.\

“Why would I fire you?”\

She glanced at the abandoned table.\

He followed her gaze, then pulled out a chair.\

“Sit if you’d like.”\

If you’d like.\

The words left a small space she did not know how to occupy.\

Elena sat.\

Her cheek throbbed. Her wrist ached beneath her sleeve. She wanted to get through her shift, collect her pay on Friday, and go home to the apartment she shared with her nineteen-year-old sister.\

Sophie had an examination that afternoon.\

She needed twenty-eight dollars for a nursing laboratory fee.\

Elena had counted the money twice before leaving home.\

“Does your eye hurt?” Alessandro asked.\

“A little.”\

“Can you see clearly?”\

“Yes.”\

He turned toward the doorway.\

“Mrs. Bennett, is Dr. Reeves still in the guest wing?”\

The housekeeper appeared almost immediately.\

“Yes.”\

“Please ask whether he can speak with Elena.”\

“No.”\

The word escaped before Elena could stop it.\

Alessandro turned back.\

“I can’t pay for that.”\

His expression changed, but his voice remained quiet.\

“We can arrange the cost. You decide whether you want to be examined.”\

She studied him.\

Kindness had once been the beginning of everything she regretted.\

Ryan had paid a bill. Fixed her car. Offered to help when her mother became ill.\

Later, every favor acquired a price.\

She looked down.\

Alessandro’s phone vibrated.\

He read the screen.\

For the first time, the stillness in his face became something else.\

Elena saw the photograph before he turned it away.\

The iron gates.\

A dark SUV.\

Ryan Mercer standing beside the intercom.\

Her breath stopped.\

“No,” she whispered.\

Alessandro looked at her.\

“You know him.”\

She nodded.\

Another message appeared beneath the photograph.\

He says Elena belongs to him. He wants her sent outside.\

Elena gripped the arms of the chair.\

Last night, Ryan had stood outside her apartment demanding money. When she refused to let him enter, he grabbed her wrist. She pulled away and struck the doorframe.\

He had watched her fall without helping.\

Now he had found her here.\

“Please,” she said. “Whatever he tells you, don’t open that gate.”\

Alessandro reached for his phone.\

His voice was almost gentle.\

“Marco. Keep it locked.”\

For three seconds, Alessandro listened to the man on the telephone.

Then his expression hardened.

"No one approaches him. Have security preserve the camera footage, and call the police if he refuses to leave."

Elena stared at him.

She had expected violence.

Men like Alessandro Moretti were famous for solving problems with frightening efficiency. She had heard stories about rival businessmen disappearing from negotiations, properties changing owners overnight, and men who made the mistake of insulting the Moretti name.

Instead, her employer was asking for camera footage.

It confused her.

"Mr. Moretti?"

He ended the call.

"Yes?"

"Ryan doesn't listen to the police."

Alessandro studied her.

"Has he threatened you before?"

She looked at the floor.

"He's my former boyfriend."

"That wasn't my question."

Her throat tightened.

"Yes."

Alessandro sat opposite her.

"Would you like to tell me what happened?"

Elena pressed her hands together.

She couldn't.

Not completely.

Ryan had spent eighteen months convincing her that everything wrong in their relationship was her responsibility.

When he became angry, she was too sensitive.

When he checked her phone, she was hiding something.

When he demanded money, she was selfish.

When he threatened Sophie, he was merely worried about their future.

He'd called it love so often that the word had begun to frighten her.

"Last night, he came to my apartment," she said.

Alessandro waited.

"He wanted money."

"How much?"

"Ten thousand dollars."

Something moved across Alessandro's face.

"Why?"

She swallowed.

"He says I owe him."

"For what?"

"Everything he spent on me when we were together."

Alessandro remained silent.

Then he asked, "Has he threatened your sister?"

Elena's head snapped up.

"How did you—"

"You looked toward your phone when I mentioned the police. There was a message on the screen about Sophie."

She stared.

He hadn't even been looking directly at it.

"I didn't mean to read anything private," he added. "I saw the name."

Elena's eyes filled.

"Ryan knows where she studies."

Alessandro leaned forward.

"Where is she now?"

"At Westbridge Community College."

"Is she aware he's been threatening you?"

Elena nodded.

"She knows some of it."

"Then she needs accurate information so she can make safety decisions."

He paused.

"And you both deserve help that doesn't depend on my permission."

For the first time that morning, Elena looked directly into his eyes.

"What does that mean?"

"It means you can contact the police, a lawyer, or a domestic violence support service. Mrs. Bennett can help you arrange time off. Nobody here will punish you for taking it."

She blinked.

"You won't fire me?"

"No."

Her mouth trembled.

"What if Ryan comes back?"

Alessandro glanced toward the window.

"He won't be allowed onto private property without authorization."

A knock sounded.

Marco Santoro, the chief of security, appeared.

He was a broad-shouldered man with silver at his temples and a permanent expression of irritation.

"Boss."

Alessandro turned.

"Is he gone?"

"Not yet."

"Police?"

"On their way."

Marco hesitated.

"There's something you should see."

He held out a tablet.

The security footage showed Ryan standing outside the gate.

A second man sat behind the wheel of the SUV.

Elena leaned forward.

Her stomach turned.

She recognized him.

Not from her neighborhood.

Not from Ryan's friends.

From inside the Moretti mansion.

The man had attended several late-night meetings with Alessandro's uncle, Vittorio Moretti.

Elena had served him coffee only three days earlier.

"That's Mr. Bellamy," she whispered.

Marco looked at her.

"You know him?"

"He's been here before."

Alessandro's expression changed.

"Daniel Bellamy?"

She nodded.

The silence grew heavy.

Then Alessandro asked, "Elena, how did Ryan know where you worked?"

She frowned.

"He followed me once."

"Are you certain?"

She remembered Ryan's strange questions.

What time Alessandro ate breakfast.

Which entrance the employees used.

Whether Vittorio still visited the estate.

He'd asked those questions before their relationship ended.

At the time, she believed he was jealous.

Now she wasn't sure.

"I don't know," she whispered.

Alessandro studied the footage.

Then said quietly, "Neither do I."

He looked at Marco.

"Find out why Bellamy is bringing a man who threatens my employee to my front gate."

Marco nodded.

As he turned to leave, Elena's phone vibrated.

A message from Sophie.

Elena, Ryan was at school yesterday. He told me something about Mom.

Elena's heart stopped.

She typed quickly.

What did he say?

The response arrived almost immediately.

He said Mom didn't die owing money.

Elena stared at the screen.

Then Sophie sent another message.

May you like

He said she died because she found out who stole it.
