Chapter 7 - THE MAN WHO OFFERED HER A KEY

The first time Alessandro offered me a place to stay, I refused.

He asked after Sophie and I learned that someone had entered our apartment while we were away.

Nothing expensive was missing.

The television remained.

Our laptops were gone, but several other valuables were untouched.

The shelves had been disturbed.

Mom's old paperwork had been moved.

And a framed photograph had been placed facedown on the kitchen counter.

It looked like a message.

Someone wanted us frightened.

Detective Grant documented the incident.

Rebecca helped us arrange temporary accommodation and discuss safety measures.

Alessandro offered an empty guest cottage on the estate.

I shook my head.

"No."

He looked surprised.

"Elena, it's secure."

"I know."

"And there would be no rent."

"That's part of the problem."

He frowned.

"What do you mean?"

I took a breath.

"Ryan started helping me with bills. Then he used every favor to tell me what I owed him."

Alessandro went still.

I continued.

"I know you're not Ryan."

He waited.

"But I don't want to feel like I belong to anyone because they gave me somewhere to sleep."

His expression softened.

"That makes sense."

I blinked.

It wasn't the reaction I'd expected.

He continued.

"Then don't accept the cottage."

I stared.

"Just like that?"

"Yes."

He looked toward Rebecca.

"Your attorney can help arrange something independent."

I nodded slowly.

"Thank you."

He smiled faintly.

"Elena, I want you to be safe. I don't need to be the person providing everything."

The words stayed with me.

That afternoon, Sophie and I moved into a temporary apartment through a confidential housing arrangement.

It was small.

Two bedrooms.

A narrow kitchen.

A living room with mismatched furniture.

But it was ours.

Nobody had a key except us and authorized building personnel.

Nobody could demand we come downstairs for a meeting.

Nobody could tell us we owed them our obedience.

Sophie stood in the doorway.

Then smiled.

"I like it."

I looked around.

"Really?"

"Yes."

She walked toward the kitchen.

"Especially the ugly curtains."

I laughed.

"They're terrible."

"Magnificently terrible."

For the first time in weeks, we laughed without immediately checking the door.

Later that evening, Alessandro called.

"Are you settled?"

"Yes."

"Good."

I hesitated.

"Mr. Moretti?"

"Alessandro."

I smiled faintly.

"Alessandro."

He remained silent.

I took a breath.

"Thank you for understanding."

"Of course."

Then he asked, "Would you like some time away from work?"

I looked toward Sophie, who was unpacking textbooks.

"Maybe a few days."

"Take them."

I hesitated.

"Will I still be paid?"

He answered without hesitation.

"We can arrange appropriate paid leave under your employment terms."

My eyes filled.

For years, every unexpected expense had felt like a threat to our survival.

Now I was being offered something I rarely allowed myself.

Time.

I took a breath.

"Thank you."

He smiled softly.

"Get some rest, Elena."

After the call, Sophie looked at me.

"He's different."

I raised an eyebrow.

"Who?"

She laughed.

"Don't pretend."

I looked away.

"He's my employer."

"Yes."

"And a complicated man."

"Very."

I folded my arms.

"Sophie."

She grinned.

"I'm just saying he listens when you say no."

I stared at her.

Then looked toward the window.

That was true.

And it frightened me.

Because I'd learned to expect kindness to become control.

Alessandro's willingness to respect my decisions made me want to trust him.

But I wasn't ready.

May you like

Not yet.
