Chapter 6 - THE NECKLACE IN THE MAID'S LOCKER

The accusation came before noon.
A diamond necklace had disappeared from the Moretti family vault.
It belonged to Dante's late mother.
The necklace was worth nearly four hundred thousand dollars.
Security searched the staff lockers.
And found it inside Elena's.
Elena stared at the velvet box.
“No.”
The head of household security looked uncomfortable.
“Miss Morales…”
“I didn't take that.”
Marcus examined the locker.
Then looked toward the corridor.
“Who ordered this search?”
The security officer hesitated.
“Mr. Whitmore's office contacted us.”
Marcus's expression hardened.
Elena looked at him.
“Please. I didn't steal anything.”
Dante entered.
His eyes moved from the necklace to Elena.
Then to the security team.
“Who found it?”
The officer raised his hand.
“I did, sir.”
“Who opened the locker?”
“I did.”
“Was Elena present?”
“No.”
Dante nodded.
“Then you have no evidence she placed it there.”
Silence.
He turned toward Marcus.
“Preserve the security footage.”
Marcus nodded.
Dante looked at Elena.
“Are you okay?”
She shook her head.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I can't lose this job.”
Dante's expression softened.
“You haven't.”
Elena swallowed.
“My mother needs treatment.”
“I know.”
She looked at the necklace.
“People are going to think I stole it.”
Dante stepped closer.
“Then we'll find out who put it there.”
That afternoon, Marcus discovered that Vanessa's personal assistant had entered the staff corridor shortly before the necklace was found.
The woman carried a small shopping bag.
She left without it.
When questioned, she admitted Vanessa had instructed her to place the necklace inside Elena's locker.
The assistant claimed she'd been told Elena had stolen it and that she was merely returning the item.
But the surveillance footage contradicted her account.
Dante watched the recording.
Then closed his eyes.

And her family had apparently hidden his brother for seven years.
