Chapter 4

## A FUNERAL FOR A MAN STILL ALIVE
Garrett had been held prisoner for six months.
Not by Conrad.
By men working for someone Garrett knew only as “E.”
He explained that Harrison had discovered money disappearing from the family's charitable foundation.
Millions.
The transfers led to shell companies connected to a decades-old crime.
Harrison intended to confess.
Before he could, someone staged the crash.
Garrett escaped.
Harrison didn't.
But Garrett had been captured afterward.
“Jonah saw me escape,” Garrett said.
“That's why he stopped talking?”
“No.”
Garrett looked at his brother.
“He stopped talking because he saw who killed Dad.”
Jasper felt cold.
“Who?”
Garrett shook his head.
“I don't know.”
But Jonah did.
Back at the mansion, Conrad had disappeared.
His office had been emptied.
On his desk lay only an envelope.
Inside:
JASPER—
IF GARRETT IS ALIVE, RUN.
SHE KNOWS YOU'RE HOME.
—CONRAD
That evening, a car stopped outside.
A woman stepped out.
She wore a red coat.
And when Jasper saw her face, he understood why the shoe behind the wall had frightened Conrad.
She looked exactly like the woman in an old photograph beside Harrison.
Evelyn Mercer.
Except Evelyn would have been seventy.
This woman was barely thirty-five.
“My name is Claire Mercer,” she said.
“Evelyn was my mother.”
Then she looked at Jonah.
May you like
“And your family murdered her.”
