Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT THE LIGHTS WENT OUT

At 11:46 p.m., the estate lost power.

Emergency generators started.

Then stopped.

The security monitors went dark.

Matteo's radio crackled.

“North gate offline.”

A second voice followed.

“East perimeter offline.”

Gabriel stood in the library.

“Everyone to the safe rooms.”

Olivia was in the east corridor reviewing housekeeping access records.

Nero suddenly ran toward her.

His ears were pinned back.

A low growl vibrated through his chest.

Olivia heard footsteps beyond the servants' staircase.

Not guards.

Too light.

Too hurried.

She stepped backward.

A figure appeared in the doorway.

A man wearing dark clothes and a medical mask.

He stopped when he saw her.

Then reached inside his jacket.

Nero lunged forward.

The man stumbled backward.

Olivia ran.

She didn't wait to discover what he intended.

She slammed the fire door behind her and pulled the alarm.

A siren erupted through the corridor.

Footsteps pounded.

Then Gabriel appeared.

“Olivia!”

She nearly collided with him.

“Someone's inside.”

He looked past her.

“Where?”

“East staircase.”

Matteo arrived with two guards.

They secured the corridor.

The intruder escaped through a service exit before they reached him.

But he left something behind.

A small metal case.

Inside was an injectable sedative and a printed photograph of Mara.

Olivia sat in the library with a blanket around her shoulders.

Her hands were shaking.

Gabriel stood nearby.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

Then said, “I'm sorry.”

She looked up.

“For what?”

“For bringing you back here.”

“You didn't force me.”

“I should have understood the risk.”

Olivia stared at him.

“You don't get to take responsibility for every decision I make.”

He was silent.

She continued.

“I came because I wanted to help. But now I want to go home.”

Gabriel nodded immediately.

“Then you will.”

Before she left, Olivia walked toward Nero.

The dog lay beside the fireplace.

She knelt and wrapped her arms around his neck.

“You saved me, big guy.”

Nero rested his head against her shoulder.

Gabriel watched from the doorway.

For a moment, he imagined what it would feel like to have a life in which someone could simply kneel beside his dog without fear.

A life without locked gates.

Without hidden microphones.

Without the weight of his family's crimes.

He had never allowed himself to want that life.

Until Olivia.

The next morning, the independent investigators identified the intruder through security footage recovered from a separate camera system.

He worked for a private transport company connected to the Wisconsin facility.

His task had been to retrieve documents from the estate.

But the sedative suggested someone had prepared for resistance.

Gabriel's attorney immediately provided the evidence to federal authorities.

Then a message arrived.

A location.

A time.

And one sentence.

COME ALONE IF YOU WANT YOUR FAMILY BACK.

Gabriel stared at it.

Matteo shook his head.

“It's a trap.”

Gabriel nodded.

“I know.”

“Then don't go.”

Gabriel looked toward the photograph of Mara.

For twenty-two years, his sister had been hidden.

For four years, his brother had been missing.

He was finished waiting.

But he had learned something from Olivia.

Running blindly toward danger was not courage.

Sometimes courage meant trusting other people to help.

May you like

He handed the message to the investigators.

“Let's do this properly.”
