Chapter 14 - THE ROOM THAT WAS NO LONGER EMPTY

A year after the microphones were discovered, Guest Room 7 was renovated.

The hidden passage was documented and secured.

The damaged ductwork was replaced.

The old listening equipment was preserved as evidence until the legal proceedings no longer required it.

Gabriel considered sealing the room permanently.

Then Mara made a suggestion.

“Turn it into something useful.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“Like what?”

“A library.”

He smiled.

“You always loved books.”

“I still do.”

She looked toward the windows.

“Let the room hold stories instead of secrets.”

The renovation took three months.

Olivia helped choose the furniture.

Mara selected the books.

Luca insisted on adding a ridiculous reading chair shaped like a throne.

Gabriel threatened to remove it.

Lily declared it her favorite.

The chair stayed.

Nero claimed the rug beneath the window.

And for the first time in four years, Guest Room 7 became a place people wanted to enter.

On the afternoon of the opening, Gabriel stood beside Olivia near the fireplace.

“Do you remember the first night?” he asked.

She smiled.

“You mean when you ordered me to get down from the chair?”

“Yes.”

“You were very bossy.”

“I was concerned.”

“You were bossy.”

He laughed.

“Both can be true.”

She looked around the room.

Sunlight filled the space.

Lily was reading on the ridiculous throne.

Mara and Luca were arguing over a detective novel.

Nero slept peacefully.

Olivia smiled.

“It's beautiful.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“Yes.”

She turned.

He wasn't looking at the room.

That evening, Gabriel asked Olivia to walk with him in the garden.

The old oak tree stood near the fountain.

Its branches moved gently in the wind.

Gabriel stopped beneath it.

“This is where Mara used to make us promise things.”

Olivia smiled.

“What kind of things?”

“That we'd always stay together. That Luca would stop stealing her books. That I'd stop pretending I was in charge of everyone.”

Olivia laughed.

“She sounds wise.”

“She was.”

He took a breath.

“She still is.”

Then he reached into his pocket.

Olivia went still.

Gabriel lowered himself onto one knee.

“Olivia Carter, I spent most of my life believing that protecting people meant controlling everything around them.”

His voice shook.

“You taught me that love begins with listening.”

Her eyes filled.

“You listened to a dog when everyone else dismissed him. You listened to my family when they needed to be heard. And you listened to yourself when it would have been easier to stay silent.”

He opened a small box.

Inside was a simple diamond ring.

“I'm not asking you to give up your home, your work, or the life you've built.”

Olivia covered her mouth.

“I'm asking whether we can build something together.”

He looked up.

“Will you marry me?”

Olivia began crying.

Then laughed.

“Yes.”

Gabriel closed his eyes.

“Yes?”

“Yes, Gabriel.”

He stood.

She threw her arms around him.

From somewhere behind them came an enormous bark.

They turned.

Nero stood on the garden path.

Lily was beside him.

“I KNEW IT!” she shouted.

Mara and Luca appeared behind her.

Gabriel laughed.

May you like

Olivia laughed.

And beneath the old oak tree, the family that had spent years separated by secrets began celebrating a future they could finally share.
