Chapter 11 - THE MAN WHO CAME BACK DIFFERENT

The investigation continued for months.

Victor Hale and several associates faced serious charges related to fraud, unlawful confinement, and obstruction.

The evidence was reviewed through the legal process.

Mara received medical care and psychological support.

Luca began recovering from his injuries.

Gabriel cooperated with investigators, including inquiries into the Duca family's historical operations.

It was not easy.

Some of the evidence implicated businesses his father had controlled.

Some records raised questions about transactions Gabriel had inherited without fully understanding.

He hired independent counsel.

Opened the relevant books.

And began dismantling the remaining structures that tied his legitimate businesses to his father's criminal network.

The process cost him money.

Influence.

And several powerful relationships.

But Gabriel had already learned what secrecy could cost.

He was no longer willing to pay that price.

Olivia returned to her regular life.

She resumed working part-time for a residential management company closer to Oak Park.

The hours were better.

The pay was steady.

And she could pick Lily up from school most afternoons.

She missed Nero.

More than she expected.

She missed the enormous dog waiting outside the laundry room.

The way he carried his favorite rope toy like a prize.

The way he watched her fold towels as though supervising a complicated operation.

Sometimes she missed Gabriel too.

She tried not to think about that part.

One Saturday afternoon, her doorbell rang.

Olivia opened it.

Gabriel stood on the porch.

Nero sat beside him wearing a red collar.

Lily screamed from the living room.

“NERO!”

The dog nearly knocked her over with enthusiasm.

Gabriel laughed.

Olivia stared.

“What are you doing here?”

He held up a paper bag.

“Peace offering.”

She looked inside.

Blueberry muffins.

Her favorite.

“How did you know?”

“You mentioned them once.”

Olivia studied him.

“You remember things people say?”

He smiled faintly.

“I'm trying to get better at it.”

They spent the afternoon in the backyard.

Lily threw a ball for Nero.

The dog retrieved it twice, then decided the game was beneath his dignity.

Gabriel sat beside Olivia on the porch.

“How's Mara?” she asked.

“Better. Some days are hard.”

“And Luca?”

“Annoying.”

Olivia laughed.

Gabriel smiled.

“Which means he's recovering.”

They sat quietly.

Then Gabriel said, “I wanted to thank you.”

“You already did.”

“Not properly.”

Olivia turned.

He continued.

“You didn't treat me like a powerful man who deserved answers. You treated me like a person who needed to listen.”

She looked at him.

“Sometimes you were difficult.”

He laughed.

“I know.”

“Very difficult.”

“I'm beginning to understand that.”

The afternoon light softened.

Lily fell asleep on a blanket beside Nero.

Gabriel looked toward them.

“She seems happy.”

Olivia smiled.

“She is.”

He hesitated.

“Would you have dinner with me sometime?”

Olivia looked at him.

“As your former employee?”

“No.”

“As a consultant?”

“No.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“Then as what?”

Gabriel took a breath.

“As a man who would like to know you better.”

Olivia studied him.

He looked nervous.

It was strangely endearing.

Then she smiled.

“Yes.”

Gabriel exhaled.

“But,” she added, “we take it slowly.”

He nodded.

“As slowly as you want.”

“And Lily comes first.”

“Of course.”

“And no surprise security details.”

He smiled.

“Understood.”

Olivia looked toward Nero.

The dog opened one eye.

May you like

She laughed.

“I think he approves.”
