Chapter 13 - THE DAUGHTER WHO ASKED THE HARDEST QUESTION

Six months later, Gabriel was part of Olivia's life.

Not every day.

Not in every decision.

But steadily.

He attended Lily's school science fair.

Helped her build a model bridge.

Learned that she hated mushrooms and loved astronomy.

He never tried to replace her father.

He never asked Olivia to rearrange her life around him.

And when Lily wanted time alone with her mother, he respected it.

One evening, Lily asked a question that made Gabriel stop.

They were sitting in Olivia's backyard.

Nero lay between them.

“Are you going to marry my mom?”

Gabriel nearly dropped his coffee.

Olivia looked up from the porch.

“Lily!”

“What?”

Her daughter shrugged.

“I'm just asking.”

Gabriel considered.

Then said, “That's something your mom and I would decide together, if the time ever came.”

Lily frowned.

“But do you love her?”

Olivia froze.

Gabriel looked toward her.

Then back at Lily.

“Yes,” he said quietly.

“I do.”

Olivia's heart began racing.

Lily nodded thoughtfully.

“Okay.”

Then she returned to brushing Nero.

As though she hadn't just changed the entire evening.

Later, Olivia and Gabriel stood in the kitchen.

“You didn't have to answer her,” Olivia said.

“I know.”

She looked at him.

“Did you mean it?”

Gabriel stepped closer.

“Yes.”

Olivia swallowed.

He continued.

“I love you, Olivia. I didn't plan to say it in front of a seven-year-old with a dog brush.”

She laughed through sudden tears.

“But it's true.”

Olivia looked at him.

For years, she had believed love required sacrifice.

That it meant giving up pieces of herself.

That security depended on keeping people happy.

Gabriel had shown her something different.

He could be powerful without controlling her.

Protective without making decisions for her.

Present without demanding that she surrender her independence.

She stepped closer.

“I love you too.”

Gabriel closed his eyes.

Then kissed her.

That winter, Mara visited Olivia's house for the first time.

She was still adjusting to ordinary life.

Crowded rooms overwhelmed her.

Unexpected noises made her anxious.

But she wanted to meet the woman who had helped expose the surveillance system.

Olivia welcomed her with tea.

No questions.

No expectations.

They sat in the sunroom.

Nero rested at Mara's feet.

After a while, Mara said, “Gabriel told me you opened the vent.”

Olivia smiled.

“Nero did most of the work.”

Mara looked down at the dog.

“He comes from a very stubborn family.”

Olivia laughed.

“So I've heard.”

Mara smiled.

Then her expression softened.

“Thank you for listening to him.”

Olivia reached across the table.

Mara took her hand.

For a moment, neither spoke.

They didn't need to.

Luca also became a regular visitor.

He brought Lily ridiculous gifts.

A telescope.

A remote-controlled helicopter.

A stuffed Cane Corso nearly as large as Nero.

Olivia threatened to ban him from toy stores.

Luca grinned.

“Gabriel never lets me have any fun.”

Gabriel rolled his eyes.

“You've had thirty-five years of fun.”

“Not all of them.”

The room went quiet.

Then Luca smiled gently.

“But the good years are starting again.”

May you like

Gabriel looked at his brother.

And smiled.
