Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT THE CAMERAS DISAPPEARED

Claire's office was broken into on a Friday night.
The intruders bypassed the front reception area.
Entered through a service corridor.
And went directly to the records room.
They stole two encrypted drives.
Damaged a server.
And attempted to erase archived contract files.
Hannah called Claire at 2:13 A.M.
“Someone broke in.”
Claire sat upright.
“What?”
“The alarm company called. Police are here.”
Claire threw back the covers.
“Is anyone hurt?”
“No. The building was empty.”
“Thank God.”
She reached for her keys.
Then stopped.
She remembered the security footage.
The forged signature.
The missing payment.
And the way Ethan had looked at her after the slap.
As though he still believed she belonged to him.
Claire called Lauren.
Then the police.
Then her IT security contractor.
She did not call Roman.
Not because she didn't trust him.
Because she wanted to handle this herself.
By dawn, the investigators discovered something important.
The intruders had missed the most valuable records.
Claire had moved her company's critical backups to an independent secure storage provider months earlier.
Hannah stared at her.
“You planned for this?”
Claire shook her head.
“I planned for a disaster.”
May you like
She looked at the damaged server.
“I just didn't know the disaster would have Ethan's face.”
