Chapter 13 - THE SISTERS WHO CHOSE DIFFERENT PATHS

Vivian Harrow left the eastern territories that summer.
She accepted a position with a financial oversight organization in Boston.
For the first time, she would build a career without relying on her father's name.
Claire remained in Hudson.
She became part of the transitional governance council.
Her knowledge of eastern politics proved invaluable.
Before Vivian left, she requested a private meeting with Elara.
They met in the palace garden.
Vivian looked uncomfortable.
“I don't know how to say this.”
Elara waited.
Vivian took a breath.
“I was cruel to you.”
Elara's expression softened.
Vivian continued.
“I knew Father treated you badly. I told myself it wasn't my responsibility.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“But I was older. I should have protected you.”
Elara looked down.
“You were a child too.”
Vivian shook her head.
“Not forever.”
Silence.
Then she whispered, “I'm sorry.”
Elara stepped forward.
Hugged her.
Vivian began crying.
Claire visited later that week.
She brought a stack of books.
Elara laughed.
“More?”
Claire smiled.
“You always loved reading.”
Elara touched the covers.
“You used to sneak books into my room.”
Claire nodded.
“I wish I'd done more.”
Elara looked at her.
“You did what you could.”
Claire shook her head.
“I want to do better now.”
Elara smiled.
“Then stay in my life.”
Claire's eyes filled.
“I will.”
That evening, Damian found Elara in the library.
She was reading one of Claire's books.
He leaned against the doorway.
“Happy?”
Elara looked up.
“I think so.”
Damian smiled.
“You think?”
She laughed.
“I'm still learning what it feels like.”
He crossed the room.
Sat beside her.
“Take your time.”
May you like
Elara leaned against him.
“I intend to.”
