Chapter 12 - THE KING WHO KNELT BEFORE HER

Spring arrived slowly in the northern territory.
Snow melted from the mountains.
Rivers swelled.
Wildflowers appeared along the palace gardens.
And the council prepared to vote on the most significant reforms in generations.
The proposed laws would prohibit forced mating bonds, unlawful dominance commands, and the confinement of wolf-born individuals based solely on bloodline.
They would also establish independent oversight of territorial leaders.
Some council members resisted.
Others supported the changes.
The debate lasted weeks.
On the morning of the final vote, Elara stood beside Damian in the council chamber.
She wore a pale silver dress.
Her hair fell loosely over her shoulders.
Damian looked at her.
“Nervous?”
She smiled.
“Terrified.”
He nodded.
“Good.”
She laughed.
“Good?”
“It means you understand the responsibility.”
Elara looked toward the council seats.
“What if they reject it?”
Damian took her hand.
“Then we keep working.”
The vote passed.
Not unanimously.
But decisively.
Applause filled the chamber.
Elara covered her mouth.
Tears spilled down her cheeks.
Damian smiled.
Then he did something nobody expected.
He stepped away from the throne.
Turned toward Elara.
And knelt.
The room went silent.
Elara stared.
“Damian?”
He looked up at her.
“For generations, kings have demanded loyalty.”
His voice carried through the chamber.
“Today, I want to demonstrate something different.”
He took her hand.
“Respect.”
Elara's eyes filled.
Damian continued.
“Elara Harrow, you were denied freedom, dignity, and the right to choose your own life.”
He swallowed.
“I cannot undo what happened.”
Silence.
“But I can promise that I will never use my power to take your choices away.”
Elara began crying.
Damian smiled softly.
“Will you stand beside me?”
She looked at him.
“As your queen?”
He shook his head.
“As yourself.”
Elara laughed through tears.
Then nodded.
“Yes.”
Damian stood.
May you like
And kissed her forehead.
The council rose in applause.
