Chapter 6 - THE MISTRESS WHO THOUGHT SHE WAS SAFE

Saraphina Cole was twenty-nine.
Beautiful.
Wealthy.
And accustomed to consequences disappearing when her father made a phone call.
She had met Callahan at a charity fundraiser.
Their affair began less than a year after our wedding.
She believed he would eventually leave me.
Then came the accident.
A rainy night.
A black Mercedes.
A pedestrian crossing Queens Boulevard.
Saraphina struck him.
Panicked.
And drove away.
Callahan arrived afterward.
He helped move the car.
Arranged for it to be detailed.
And began constructing a story that placed me behind the wheel.
He told Saraphina not to worry.
“Eloise will cooperate.”
She stared.
“Why would she?”
Callahan smiled.
“Because she's my wife.”
Saraphina believed him.
Until the day she saw a photograph online.
Three men entering the courthouse.
Gabriel Bennett.
Julian Bennett.
Nathaniel Bennett.
And between them stood Eloise.
Her face went pale.
She called Callahan immediately.
“Who are those men?”
Callahan frowned.
“What?”
“The Bennetts.”
Silence.
Saraphina swallowed.
“Why are they with your wife?”
Callahan stared at the photograph.

Then whispered:
“I don't know.”
