Chapter 9 - THE FATHER WHO FINALLY TOLD THE TRUTH

Salvatore Moretti confessed two days later.

Not to a crime.

To a failure.

He called Luca into his study.

The old man looked smaller than ever.

“I knew Vincent was taking money.”

Luca stared.

“How much?”

“I didn't know.”

“You suspected.”

Salvatore nodded.

“Yes.”

Luca felt anger rise.

“And you let him stay?”

“I believed I could control him.”

Luca laughed bitterly.

“That's what we always say.”

Salvatore looked down.

“I was wrong.”

For a long moment, Luca said nothing.

Then his father opened a drawer.

Inside was a photograph.

A young woman standing beside a small grocery store.

Luca recognized her immediately.

His mother.

She had died when he was twelve.

Salvatore touched the photograph.

“Your mother wanted me to leave this life.”

Luca stared.

“She did?”

“Every day.”

“Why didn't you?”

Salvatore's eyes filled.

“Because I was afraid of becoming ordinary.”

Luca felt something tighten in his chest.

His father continued.

“I told myself I was protecting the family. But the truth was simpler.”

He looked up.

“I loved power.”

Silence.

Then Salvatore whispered:

“And I lost the woman I loved because of it.”

Luca sat slowly.

His father looked at him.

“Don't make my mistake.”

Luca stared at the photograph.

Then nodded.

“I won't.”

Over the following weeks, Luca began working with legal counsel, auditors, and law enforcement to separate legitimate businesses from criminal operations.

It wasn't simple.

Some associates resisted.

Some contracts collapsed.

Several investigations widened.

But Luca refused to return to the old system.

He knew that change would require more than good intentions.

May you like

It would require accountability.

And it would cost him much of the power he'd once believed defined him.
