Chapter 10 - THE GIRL WHO WENT BACK TO SCHOOL

Luna enrolled in college the following semester.

She received financial aid and a community scholarship.

She studied education.

Worked part-time.

And continued volunteering at the literacy center.

She was exhausted.

She was happy.

One afternoon, Luca arrived outside her classroom carrying coffee.

She laughed.

“You're becoming predictable.”

He smiled.

“Is that bad?”

“Not necessarily.”

They walked across campus.

Students hurried between buildings.

Nobody bowed to Luca.

Nobody whispered his name.

Nobody seemed to know who he was.

Luna looked at him.

“Does it bother you?”

“What?”

“Being ordinary.”

He considered the question.

Then smiled.

“No.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“Really?”

He nodded.

“It's strangely peaceful.”

They sat beneath a tree.

Luna opened her textbook.

Luca looked at the pages.

“Educational psychology?”

“Yes.”

“Difficult?”

“Very.”

He smiled.

“You'll be excellent.”

She studied him.

“You always say that.”

“Because I believe it.”

Luna closed the book.

“Luca?”

“Yes?”

“Do you still want to marry me?”

He looked at her.

“More than ever.”

She swallowed.

“Even if I don't want to live in the mansion?”

“Yes.”

“Even if I keep working?”

“Yes.”

“Even if I disagree with you?”

He smiled.

“Especially then.”

Luna laughed.

He took her hand.

“But I won't ask again until you're ready.”

She studied him.

Then leaned against his shoulder.

May you like

For the first time, the future didn't feel like a trap.

It felt like a possibility.
