Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN WHO WOULDN'T TAKE HIS MONEY

Mateo offered to pay Lily's outstanding bills.

He did it badly.

We were sitting in a hospital waiting room.

I had just finished arguing with an insurance representative.

He listened for ten minutes.

Then said:

“I can cover it.”

I stared.

“What?”

“The debt.”

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because I was exhausted.

“Mateo, you can't just buy your way through every problem.”

His expression tightened.

“I wasn't trying to.”

“Then what were you trying to do?”

“Help.”

I looked away.

For a moment, I hated how much I wanted to say yes.

He sat beside me.

“Harley.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“Okay.”

I looked at him.

“Okay?”

He nodded.

“It's your decision.”

Silence settled between us.

Then I whispered:

“I don't want to owe you.”

Mateo looked at me.

“You don't.”

I swallowed.

“Everybody says that until they want something.”

He was quiet.

Then he said:

“I don't want your gratitude.”

I looked up.

“What do you want?”

His eyes held mine.

“For you to sleep more than four hours.”

My throat tightened.

“For Lily to get the care she needs.”

He paused.

“And maybe, someday, for you to let me buy you dinner without thinking there's a catch.”

I stared at him.

Then laughed softly.

“You already buy dinner every Tuesday.”

“That's different.”

“How?”

“You bring the food.”

I smiled.

He leaned back.

“Harley, I'm not asking you to trust me because I have money.”

I looked at him.

“Then why?”

“Because I'm trying to be someone worth trusting.”

That evening, I called the hospital's financial assistance office.

I requested a formal review of Lily's disputed charges.

Evelyn helped connect us with an independent patient advocate.

We began the slow process of separating legitimate medical expenses from questionable third-party billing.

Mateo didn't interfere.

He simply asked how the meetings went.

May you like

And brought coffee when I needed it.

For the first time, I began to understand that accepting support didn't have to mean surrendering control.
