Chapter 12 - THE BILL THAT NEVER SHOULD HAVE EXISTED

The financial investigation continued while Lily recovered.
Several disputed Calder charges were found to lack adequate documentation.
Some had been duplicated.
Others involved services that records did not support.
The hospital and insurers reviewed the affected accounts.
Regulators and investigators examined broader patterns.
For Lily, the review resulted in substantial corrections.
Additional assistance programs reduced eligible remaining balances.
One afternoon, I received a revised statement.
I stared at the numbers.
Then read them again.
The balance was far smaller than before.
Not zero.
But manageable.
I sat on the kitchen floor and cried.
Not because money had suddenly become meaningless.
Because for the first time, the numbers no longer looked like a sentence I could never escape.
Mateo found me there.
He knelt.
“Harley?”
I handed him the statement.
He read it.
Then smiled.
“That's good news.”
I laughed through tears.
“That's the understatement of the century.”
He sat beside me on the floor.
For a while, neither spoke.
Then I whispered:
“I thought I was failing her.”
Mateo looked at me.
“You weren't.”
I shook my head.
“I couldn't pay everything.”
“You were trying to carry a system's failures by yourself.”
May you like
I leaned against him.
For the first time, I believed I might be allowed to rest.
