Chapter 10 - THE TRUTH ABOUT THE EXPLOSION

The investigation finally identified the man who had approached Mateo's Lincoln.

His name was Derek Haines.

He had worked as a contractor for a security company connected to Calder's investors.

Investigators found evidence linking him to the vehicle used near Diner 82.

Additional records suggested the attack had been coordinated with people attempting to prevent the Calder acquisition audit.

Derek was arrested.

During questioning, he provided information about the payment arrangements and the people who had contacted him.

The evidence led investigators toward a group of executives and intermediaries connected to Calder.

Leonard Price also cooperated after receiving legal counsel.

Mateo was informed that the attempt on his life appeared connected to his refusal to authorize questionable transactions.

He sat silently when Evelyn explained.

Then looked at me.

“You saved my life because you noticed something nobody else did.”

I shrugged.

“I saw a man under your car.”

He shook his head.

“You acted.”

I looked down.

He continued.

“Most people would have run away.”

I smiled sadly.

“Maybe.”

Mateo leaned forward.

“Why didn't you?”

I thought about it.

Then answered honestly.

“Because you were walking toward it.”

He stared.

I continued.

“I didn't think about who you were.”

“Just that I was in danger?”

I nodded.

Mateo smiled faintly.

“Harley.”

“Yes?”

“I'm in love with you.”

My heart stopped.

I stared.

“What?”

He looked almost embarrassed.

“I know the timing is terrible.”

I laughed.

“Terrible?”

He nodded.

“Possibly the worst.”

I looked at him.

Then whispered:

“I think I'm in love with you too.”

He smiled.

Then asked:

“Can I kiss you?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

May you like

He kissed me gently.

And for a moment, the world outside the hospital disappeared.
