Chapter 9 - THE FIRST KISS HE DIDN'T PLAN

The first time Damian kissed Elena, it was raining.
She had invited him to dinner.
Not at the estate.
At a small restaurant near the hospital.
She insisted on paying.
Damian tried to object.
Elena raised an eyebrow.
“Mr. Bellucci.”
He stopped.
She smiled.
“I invited you.”
He nodded.
“Understood.”
They sat near the window.
A candle flickered between them.
For the first time, Elena saw him without the weight of the estate surrounding him.
He was still intimidating.
Still controlled.
Still handsome in a way that made strangers glance twice.
But he laughed.
Quietly.
Unexpectedly.
When she told him about Lily's attempt to wash Mr. Buttons in the kitchen sink, he nearly choked on his water.
Elena stared.
“Are you laughing?”
“No.”
“You are.”
He cleared his throat.
“I was coughing.”
She smiled.
“Of course.”
Later, they walked beneath the awning outside the restaurant.
Rain fell softly.
Elena pulled her coat tighter.
Damian looked at her.
“Are you cold?”
“A little.”
He removed his coat.
She shook her head.
“Damian—”
He paused.
It was the first time she'd used his first name.
He smiled.
“Say that again.”
She blinked.
“What?”
“My name.”
Elena laughed softly.
“Damian.”
His expression changed.
Something vulnerable appeared beneath the composure.
He stepped closer.
“Elena.”
She looked up.
He hesitated.
“May I kiss you?”
Her heart stumbled.
For a moment, she thought about Noah.
Her husband.
The man she'd loved.
The father of her daughter.
She had believed she would never love again.
But grief wasn't the absence of future happiness.
It was the proof that past happiness had mattered.
She looked at Damian.
“Yes.”
He touched her cheek.
Gently.
Carefully.
Then kissed her.
It was soft.
Unhurried.
A question rather than a claim.
When he pulled away, Elena's eyes filled.
Damian stepped back immediately.
“I'm sorry.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
He looked worried.
“Elena—”
She smiled through tears.
“It's just been a long time since I felt happy without feeling guilty.”
Damian's expression softened.
He took her hand.
“You don't have to apologize for being happy.”
She began crying.
May you like
He held her.
And beneath the rain, Elena Parker allowed herself to believe that love might still be possible.
