Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT THEY CAME FOR HER DAUGHTER

Vincent Caruso made his move on a Friday evening.
Elena was preparing dinner in the staff block.
Lily sat at the table coloring.
Damian was in a meeting across the estate.
The security team had been alerted to the threat against Elena and Lily.
But Caruso knew the property.
He knew the service routes.
He knew which contractors had access.
And he knew how to exploit the routines of people who believed they were safe.
A delivery van entered through the outer service gate using forged paperwork.
Two men stepped out.
They wore maintenance uniforms.
One approached the staff block.
The other remained near the van.
Elena heard a knock.
She opened the door slightly.
“Can I help you?”
The man smiled.
“Maintenance inspection.”
Elena frowned.
“I wasn't told about one.”
“New schedule.”
He lifted a clipboard.
Elena hesitated.
Then Lily appeared behind her.
“Mommy?”
The man's eyes shifted.
Elena felt something cold move through her chest.
She stepped backward.
“I'm going to call security.”
The man's smile vanished.
He pushed the door.
Elena slammed it.
The impact rattled the frame.
She grabbed Lily.
“Run!”
The little girl screamed.
Elena carried her toward the back exit.
Her heart pounded.
She reached the corridor.
Then a second man appeared.
Elena stopped.
He stepped forward.
“Don't make this difficult.”
Elena tightened her grip on Lily.
“Stay away from us.”
The man reached toward her.
A voice thundered from the far end of the corridor.
“Step away from them.”
Damian.
He stood beside Marco and two security officers.
His face was terrifyingly calm.
The man froze.
Damian stepped forward.
“Now.”
The intruder hesitated.
Then raised his hands.
Security moved in.
The other man tried to flee.
He was stopped outside.
Elena stood trembling.
Lily buried her face against her mother's shoulder.
Damian approached slowly.
“Elena.”
She looked at him.
Her lips trembled.
“Damian.”
“Are you hurt?”
She shook her head.
He looked at Lily.
“Is she?”
“No.”
Damian exhaled.
Then he looked toward Marco.
“Call the police. Preserve the security footage.”
Marco nodded.
Damian turned back to Elena.
“Can I hold her?”
Elena hesitated.
Then Lily reached toward him.
“Mr. Damian.”
He took her carefully.
The little girl clung to his neck.
She was shaking.
Damian closed his eyes.
For one terrible moment, he imagined what could have happened.
Then Lily whispered, “I was scared.”
His voice broke.
“I know.”
She hugged him tighter.
“Will the bad men come back?”
Damian swallowed.
“We're going to do everything we can to keep you safe.”
Elena began crying.
Damian held Lily with one arm and reached for Elena's hand with the other.
He had spent his life believing strength meant never showing fear.
May you like
But standing in that corridor, holding a frightened child, he understood something different.
Real strength meant protecting people without making them afraid of you.
