Chapter 4 - THE MOTHER WHO WAS AFRAID TO HOPE

Elena's doctors identified a condition requiring treatment and follow-up.

They explained the findings carefully.

Discussed her options.

Answered her questions.

For the first time in weeks, Elena understood what was happening to her body.

The fear didn't vanish.

But it became something she could face.

Damian didn't attend her medical discussions unless she invited him.

He arranged transportation.

Made sure her leave was approved.

And insisted that no staff member be penalized for seeking medical care.

Elena found all of it bewildering.

The man everyone called ruthless was behaving with more consideration than people who claimed to be respectable.

On her third evening in the hospital, Lily arrived carrying a paper bag.

Damian followed several steps behind.

Elena smiled.

“Baby!”

Lily ran toward the bed.

“Mommy!”

Elena opened her arms.

Lily climbed carefully beside her.

“I missed you.”

“I missed you too.”

Lily touched her mother's cheek.

“Does your tummy still hurt?”

“A little.”

“Did the doctor fix it?”

“He's helping.”

Lily nodded.

Then she reached into the bag.

“I brought you something.”

Elena smiled.

“What is it?”

Lily pulled out a sandwich.

It was slightly squashed.

The bread had been cut unevenly.

There was far too much cheese.

“I made it.”

Elena stared.

“You did?”

Lily nodded proudly.

“Mr. Damian helped.”

Elena looked toward the doorway.

Damian stood with his hands in his pockets.

He looked distinctly uncomfortable.

Lily continued.

“He doesn't know how to make sandwiches.”

Elena laughed.

Damian raised an eyebrow.

“I've been informed my technique requires improvement.”

Lily nodded solemnly.

“He put the cheese on the outside.”

Elena burst out laughing.

Damian looked offended.

“It was a temporary arrangement.”

Lily giggled.

For the first time in months, Elena laughed without forcing herself.

Damian watched her.

The sound did something strange to him.

It made the hospital room feel warmer.

Later, when Lily was distracted by a coloring book, Elena looked at him.

“Thank you.”

He nodded.

“You're welcome.”

“No. I mean it.”

She swallowed.

“For everything.”

Damian hesitated.

“You don't owe me gratitude for basic decency.”

Elena looked down.

“People don't always see it that way.”

He studied her.

Then said, “I'm beginning to understand that.”

She looked toward Lily.

“My husband used to say that.”

Damian's expression softened.

“What?”

“That kindness shouldn't be treated like a miracle.”

He was quiet.

Elena smiled sadly.

“His name was Noah.”

Damian nodded.

“How long ago did he die?”

“Two years.”

“I'm sorry.”

She looked toward the window.

“He was a firefighter.”

Damian listened.

“He died responding to an apartment building fire.”

Her voice trembled.

“He went back inside because someone said there was a child on the third floor.”

Damian's chest tightened.

“Was there?”

Elena nodded.

“A little boy.”

She wiped her eyes.

“Noah got him out.”

Damian was silent.

“He didn't make it himself.”

Elena looked down at her hands.

“Lily was only one.”

Damian stared at her.

Then he said quietly, “He sounds like a brave man.”

Elena smiled through tears.

“He was.”

Damian looked toward Lily.

The little girl was coloring a yellow house.

Flowers filled the front yard.

He remembered her prayer.

A house with yellow flowers.

Something settled inside him.

A decision.

May you like

He didn't yet know what it would cost.

But he knew he was going to make it.
