Chapter 3 - THE SECRET HIDDEN IN THE HOUSEKEEPER'S LEDGER

Elena woke in a hospital room.
For several seconds, she couldn't remember how she'd arrived.
Then she saw the IV line.
The monitors.
The pale blue curtains.
Her heart began pounding.
“Lily?”
She tried to sit up.
Pain shot through her abdomen.
“Lily!”
The door opened.
Damian Bellucci entered.
Elena froze.
He wore a dark coat over his suit.
His expression was serious.
“Your daughter is safe.”
Elena stared.
“Where is she?”
“With Mrs. Alvarez from the kitchen. She's eating breakfast.”
Elena exhaled shakily.
Then panic returned.
“The hospital—”
“Your care is being handled.”
She shook her head.
“I can't afford—”
“Mrs. Parker.”
His voice was gentle but firm.
“You don't have to solve the bill before you find out what's wrong.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“Why are you doing this?”
Damian hesitated.
He could have said it was company policy.
Could have claimed it was routine.
Instead, he answered honestly.
“Because someone should have noticed you needed help.”
Elena looked away.
“I don't want charity.”
“Then don't call it charity.”
“What should I call it?”
“An employer correcting a failure.”
She looked back at him.
For the first time, Damian seemed uncomfortable.
“I reviewed the staff benefits this morning,” he said. “Your coverage should have been more comprehensive than what you were told.”
Elena frowned.
“What?”
“There are discrepancies.”
She stared.
Damian continued.
“Payroll deductions. Medical benefits. Staff housing charges.”
Her stomach tightened.
“Mrs. Whitmore handles those.”
“I know.”
Elena lowered her eyes.
Damian watched her carefully.
“Has she threatened your employment?”
Elena hesitated.
He noticed.
“Mrs. Parker.”
She swallowed.
“Sometimes.”
“What kind of threats?”
“She says people who complain don't stay long.”
Damian's expression darkened.
Elena quickly added, “She's strict, but—”
“You don't need to defend her.”
Elena looked at him.
He continued.
“I'm having the records reviewed.”
A nurse entered.
Damian stepped aside.
Before leaving, he turned back.
“Your daughter asked me to tell you something.”
Elena's eyes widened.
“What?”
Damian paused.
“She said you should have the big piece next time.”
Elena's face crumpled.
She covered her mouth.
Damian quietly left.
In the corridor, Marco waited.
“Sir.”
Damian looked at him.
“What did you find?”
Marco handed him a folder.
“Mrs. Whitmore has been managing a private staff assistance fund for seven years.”
Damian frowned.
“What fund?”
“Money set aside for emergency medical expenses, family support, and housing assistance.”
“Authorized by whom?”
“Your father.”
Damian went still.
Marco continued.
“The fund was supposed to continue after his death.”
“And?”
Marco's expression hardened.
“Most employees don't know it exists.”
Damian opened the folder.
A list of payments.
Housing deductions.
Emergency requests.
Rejected applications.
Then he saw Elena's name.
Parker, Elena — Medical Assistance Request: Denied.
Damian stared.
“When?”
“Six weeks ago.”
His jaw tightened.
“Who denied it?”
Marco hesitated.
“Margaret Whitmore.”
Damian looked up.
“On what authority?”
“That's what we're investigating.”
Damian turned another page.
Then another.
The figures didn't reconcile.
Money had been withdrawn from the fund.
Large amounts.
Transferred through accounts connected to outside vendors.
Damian's expression changed.
He knew those vendor names.
He'd seen them before.
Not in household accounts.
In financial reports from one of his shipping companies.
He looked at Marco.
“Find out where the money went.”
Marco nodded.
May you like
Damian closed the folder.
“And keep Mrs. Whitmore away from Elena Parker.”
