Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN HE COULDN'T BUY BACK

Gabriel found Clara at a small bookstore in Wisconsin.

She was standing behind the counter, wearing jeans and a green sweater.

Her hair was loose.

She looked younger.

Happier.

Until she saw him.

Then her smile disappeared.

“Gabriel.”

He stopped.

For the first time in years, he didn't know what to say.

Clara folded her arms.

“How did you find me?”

He hesitated.

Then answered.

“I asked around.”

Her expression hardened.

“You had someone track me.”

Gabriel looked away.

“Yes.”

Clara stared.

“Then you still haven't learned anything.”

He swallowed.

“Clara—”

“No.”

She stepped back.

“You don't get to decide where I work.”

“I know.”

“You don't get to decide where I live.”

“I know.”

“And you don't get to show up because you suddenly realized your office doesn't function without me.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“That's not why I'm here.”

Clara's eyes filled.

“Then why?”

He swallowed.

“Because Isabella threatened your brother.”

Silence.

Clara went pale.

Gabriel continued.

“And because I should have listened when you tried to warn me.”

She stared at him.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then Clara whispered, “Is Daniel safe?”

Gabriel nodded.

“He's been contacted by law enforcement. He knows about the threat.”

Her knees weakened.

Gabriel stepped forward.

Then stopped.

“May I help?”

May you like

Clara looked at him.

And for the first time, he waited for her answer.
