Chapter 6 - The Hidden Ledger of Deceit

While Julian spent the weekend celebrating his impending windfall at exclusive rooftop lounges, Audrey and Douglas Vance spent forty-eight sleepless hours dissecting the Mercer family’s financial records.

What they uncovered was far more sinister than standard opportunism.

Julian Mercer had not simply accumulated bad debt; he had systematically embezzled $1.8 million from his previous employer’s venture fund, using forged commercial invoices routed through shell companies registered under Lenora’s maiden name. His creditors had given him a strict sixty-day deadline to repay the funds before filing criminal referrals with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Furthermore, Douglas discovered that thirty years earlier, Lenora Voss had not merely had a consensual affair with Richard Bellamy—she had attempted to extort $500,000 from him by threatening to plant falsified accounting logs in the state revenue audit. Richard had settled the dispute out of court, paying her to vanish, a decision that had broken his wife’s spirit and fractured his relationship with Audrey.

“They are serial extortionists,” Douglas said, slamming a three-hundred-page evidentiary dossier onto his desk. “Mother and son operate as a coordinated syndicate. Julian targets wealthy heiresses facing family crises, while Lenora manages the offshore laundering pipeline.”

Audrey walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the city lights.

“They destroyed my mother’s happiness thirty years ago for cash,” Audrey murmured, her voice steady and resolute. “And they came back to finish off what remained of my father’s life. They think I am a vulnerable girl waiting to be saved.”

“What is your instruction for Monday, Audrey?”

“Notify the District Attorney’s Corporate Fraud Task Force,” Audrey replied. “And tell the board members to arrive at 11:00 AM sharp. The show begins on time.”
