Chapter 1 - The Maid on Her Knees

Audrey Bellamy had spent years imagining what she would say if she ever stood face-to-face with the woman who helped destroy her mother’s marriage.
She never imagined it would happen on her wedding day.
Lenora Voss arrived that morning wearing a plain maid’s uniform. To everyone else among the three hundred elite guests filling the seaside terrace of the Bellamy Estate in Newport, Rhode Island, she was temporary catering staff. To Audrey, she was the woman who had once been involved with Richard Bellamy while he was still married to Audrey’s mother.
Audrey had grown up watching what came after that affair. Her mother stopped eating properly. She spent long afternoons sitting alone in the darkened sunroom, staring at the manicured garden without speaking. Bitter arguments echoed behind heavy mahogany doors late into the night. Eventually, her mother packed two suitcases, left the Bellamy manor, and Audrey went to live with her maternal grandparents.
Years later, when Audrey was old enough to sift through public records and old correspondence, she learned the full truth: Richard had betrayed his wife, and Lenora had entered the affair fully aware that he had a family. Audrey never forgot either of them for it.
So when Lenora reappeared three weeks before the wedding—desperately petitioning Richard’s estate office for a dormant business payout—Audrey intervened and made her an offer: work the ceremony as a banquet maid, follow Audrey’s instructions without complaint, endure one single day of servitude, and afterward, Audrey would sign away a contested property claim tied to Richard Bellamy’s commercial holdings.
Lenora accepted. That was the part no guest knew.
By the time the reception began, Audrey had already watched Lenora serve vintage champagne to socialites who would once have treated her very differently. Then one glass tipped, spilling sparkling wine across Audrey’s custom satin heel.
Lenora immediately reached for a cloth. Audrey stopped her with the tip of her toe.
“Clean it.”
Lenora bent down. Audrey pulled her foot back slightly.
“On your knees.”
The laughter and conversations around them began to fade. Lenora looked up, her jaw tightening. For a fleeting second, Audrey thought the woman might refuse. Then Lenora slowly lowered both knees onto the wet flagstones. A few bridesmaids laughed. Other guests simply stared in uneasy fascination.
Lenora began wiping the champagne from Audrey’s shoe. Audrey looked down at her coldly.

“That’s what you’re paid for.”
The older woman said nothing. She kept cleaning. Because whatever money waited for her after the wedding mattered enough for her to swallow every ounce of pride.
