Chapter 3 - The Pregnancy Bait

The truth unfolded that evening at Lenora’s suburban apartment. Once Lenora revealed who Audrey truly was—and that Richard Bellamy’s declining health meant Audrey stood to inherit the multi-million-dollar maritime trust—Julian’s righteous indignation evaporated instantly.
The man who had dramatically thrown away his ring in front of three hundred people suddenly began calling Audrey’s phone at midnight.
Over the next forty-eight hours, Julian sent flowers, left voice memos pleading that he had acted in ‘blind shock,’ and requested a private meeting. When Audrey answered his calls, she noticed the subtle shift in his tone. He wasn't asking about how they could heal emotionally; he was asking about her father’s prognosis, the status of the trust paperwork, and whether she still intended to surrender the commercial property.
Audrey sat in her father’s library with her trusted estate attorney, Douglas Vance.
“He targeted you from the start, didn't he?” Douglas asked, laying down Julian’s background dossier. “Julian Mercer was drowning in private equity debts. He met you at the charity gala six months ago knowing exactly who your father was.”
“He thinks he’s playing me,” Audrey whispered, tracing the edge of her coffee cup. “He thinks because I was quiet, I was naive.”
“What do you want to do, Audrey?”
Audrey looked at the portrait of her late mother hanging above the fireplace. “I’m going to make sure he comes back close enough to hang himself with his own greed.”
That afternoon, Audrey agreed to meet Julian at a secluded waterfront cafe in Newport. Julian arrived looking contrite, wearing a soft cashmere sweater, his hair neatly parted, offering an emotional apology about family loyalty and regret.
Audrey listened without interrupting. Then, she lowered her gaze and placed a trembling hand over her stomach.
“Julian... there’s something I didn't tell you before the wedding.”
Julian leaned forward, his brow furrowing. “What is it, Audrey?”
“I missed my period two weeks ago,” she said softly, keeping her voice barely above a whisper. “I took three tests this morning. I’m pregnant.”
Julian’s breath caught. His eyes flared not with tenderness, but with an unmistakable flash of predatory calculation. A child with the sole Bellamy heiress was a permanent, unbreakable key to the entire family empire.
“Audrey,” Julian breathed, reaching across the table to clasp her hands. “My love... we can fix this. We have to get married. For our baby.”

Audrey smiled through fake tears.
She wasn't pregnant. She had never been pregnant. But the trap was officially set.
