Chapter 7 - The Child Elena Refused to Abandon
Three months after the arrests, Parker suffered a severe allergic reaction at school.
His emergency records were incomplete because his parents had always used private physicians.
The school called his temporary guardian.
No answer.
Then they called Elena because Margaret had listed her as an emergency family contact during the trust proceedings.
Elena arrived at the hospital as a nurse and relative.
Parker’s breathing had stabilized, but he remained frightened.
“Is my mom coming?” he asked.
“She cannot.”
“Dad?”
“No.”
He began crying.
Elena sat beside him.
Mia arrived later with Margaret.
She carried the dinosaur puzzle.
Parker recognized it.
“You still have it?”
“You gave it back.”
“I’m sorry.”
“For the chair?”
“I didn’t laugh.”
“You didn’t stop them.”
Parker looked down.
“I was scared of Sloane.”
Mia considered this.
Then she placed the puzzle on his bed.
“We can do it now.”
They assembled dinosaurs while adults discussed custody outside.
Sloane stood alone near the doorway.
She had lost the arrogance she wore at the party.
“I said those things because Mom said people only respect you if they are beneath you,” she told Elena.
“Do you believe that?”
“I don’t know.”
“That means you need time to learn.”
“Do you hate me?”
“No.”
Sloane looked surprised.
“Are you going to let me live with you?”
Elena had not been asked.
Margaret’s attorney explained that the children’s temporary guardian had suffered a medical emergency.
No suitable relatives were immediately available.
Margaret could provide a staffed home, but she wanted Elena’s opinion.
Elena thought of Mia beside the trash.
Protecting her daughter did not require punishing other children.
But bringing Sloane and Parker into their life required boundaries.
Elena agreed to temporary shared guardianship with Margaret.
The children moved into a smaller guesthouse on Margaret’s estate, not Whitmore Hall.
Mia visited often.
Sloane apologized without being forced.
Mia did not forgive immediately.
That was allowed.
Over time, they built something different.
Not friendship based on forgetting.
A relationship based on changed behavior.
Elena’s refusal to abandon Parker and Sloane became public news.
Reporters called her saintly.
She rejected the description.
“Children are not responsible for adult indictments,” she said.
