Chapter 5 - Vanessa’s Missing Millions
Vanessa refused to cooperate.
She held a press conference outside Whitmore Hall.
She described Elena as a manipulative nurse who had exploited Margaret during illness.
She said Matthew’s death was tragic but unrelated to business.
She claimed the pension transfers were sophisticated investments misunderstood by outsiders.
Then a reporter asked why she placed Mia beside the trash.
Vanessa smiled tightly.
“I did not.”
The patio footage was released the next day.
It showed Vanessa instructing a caterer to move the chair.
It captured Sloane saying poor children belonged near garbage.
It captured adults laughing.
And it captured Elena discovering Mia.
Public sympathy disappeared.
But the footage revealed another detail.
Charles stood near the kitchen door during Margaret’s announcement.
The moment she mentioned missing funds, he texted someone.
Investigators obtained the message.
Move everything tonight. She knows.
The recipient was a banker in the Cayman Islands.
The failed twelve-million-dollar transfer had been the first of five planned movements.
Another fifty-eight million remained in domestic accounts.
Elena’s trust suspension stopped them.
Charles attempted to flee through Canada.
He was arrested at the border carrying cash, encrypted drives, and a passport issued under another name.
Vanessa remained.
Without Charles, she began blaming him.
She claimed he controlled every company.
Emails showed she approved transfers and demanded personal payments.
One message from the week before Matthew’s death read:
He will not stop. Handle the road meeting yourself.
Charles replied:
I have someone.
The words were not a confession.
They were enough to expand the investigation.
The “someone” was identified as Dean Mercer, a former security contractor employed by Charles.
Dean had followed Matthew before the crash.
Cell records placed him near the repair shop and Route 27.
When arrested, he denied everything.
Then prosecutors showed him Charles’s border statement blaming Dean alone.
Loyalty collapsed.
Dean admitted cutting the brake line.
He claimed Charles ordered him only to frighten Matthew.
“That makes no sense,” the investigator said. “Cut brakes do not frighten someone. They kill.”
Dean lowered his head.
“He said Matthew would drive slowly in the rain.”
“Did Vanessa know?”
“She was in the room.”
Elena listened from behind the interview glass.
Vanessa had watched Mia cry.
She had watched Matthew challenge theft.
Both times, she believed humiliation and danger were acceptable tools for maintaining hierarchy.
The scale changed.
