Chapter 4 - The First Spark in the Synapse

The realization settled over the room like an arctic frost.

Santiago did not scream. He did not slam the metal table.

He closed his eyes for five long seconds, allowing the profound, agonizing grief of familial betrayal to burn away completely, leaving only the sharp, impenetrable diamond of his will.

"Mateo," Santiago spoke softly.

"Yes, Boss?"

"You and four of your most trusted operators will secure the private guest wing at my residence in Lomas de Chapultepec. Starting tonight, not a single bottle of water, not a plate of food, and not a single medication enters my room unless it is prepared by Julia."

"What about Miss Esquivel and Dr. Luján?" Mateo asked.

"Let them believe the poison is working," Santiago replied with icy precision. "Let them believe I am growing weaker by the day."

He looked at Julia.

"We have seven days before the extraordinary general assembly of Barrera Logistics. Can you clear the chemical blockade from my nerves in seven days?"

Julia pulled her battered notebook and a box of pharmaceutical-grade chelating agents from Dr. Alvarez’s cabinet.

"It will hurt, Santiago," Julia warned, her voice grave. "As the Saxitoxin washes out of your lumbar receptors, your sensory axons will re-awaken in an un-buffered state. You will experience severe peripheral neuropathic spasms, muscle cramping, and intense burning from your thighs to your toes."

"Pain is information, Doctor," Santiago said, holding out his arm for the first intravenous infusion of the antidote. "Pain means I am alive."

At 9:30 PM that evening, inside the soundproofed master bedroom of the Lomas estate, Santiago took his first deep breath without the dark tonic.

At 2:45 AM, the first violent spasm struck his right quadriceps.

His knee jerked upward three inches off the mattress.

Santiago gasped, sweat drenching his brow, tears of sheer, overwhelming vindication burning his eyes as he looked down at his own moving leg.
