Chapter 9 - THE MAN WHO COULDN'T WALK AWAY

Cedric called me three days later.
I almost didn't answer.
Then I did.
"Hello?"
"Analisa."
His voice sounded tired.
"Are you safe?"
I looked around my apartment.
"For now."
He exhaled.
"Good."
Silence.
Then I asked:
"How's your wrist?"
He hesitated.
"Better."
I swallowed.
"Was it an injury from the accident?"
"No."
My heart tightened.
"What happened?"
He paused.
Then answered:
"Someone tried to poison me."
I went cold.
"What?"
"The wound was from an emergency procedure."
I stared at the wall.
"Who?"
"I don't know yet."
Silence.
Then Cedric said:
"I owe you the truth."
I closed my eyes.
"Yes."
He continued.
"The wheelchair isn't a disguise."
I frowned.
"I never thought it was."
He swallowed.
"My spinal cord was injured during an attack eleven months ago. I have incomplete paraplegia."
I listened.
"Some sensation has returned. Some movement. But I don't know how much function I'll recover."
My throat tightened.
He continued.
"And someone has been interfering with my medical care."
I stared.
"Who?"
May you like
His voice lowered.
"I think it's the same person who killed your mother."
