Chapter 6 - THE DEBT THAT WAS NEVER MINE

The next morning, I demanded to see the debt agreement.
Cedric didn't argue.
He asked Tomaso to bring the original documents.
We sat in the study.
The papers were placed on the desk.
I read them carefully.
Then read them again.
My stomach tightened.
"This debt isn't mine."
Cedric watched me.
"No."
I stared.
"What?"
He folded his hands.
"The debt was assigned to your family fifteen years ago."
I looked at Tomaso.
"After the fire?"
He nodded.
I felt sick.
"Why?"
Cedric's expression hardened.
"Because someone wanted to make sure you remained financially vulnerable."
I stared.
"Someone?"
He nodded.
"Someone who didn't want you asking questions about your mother's death."
My hands trembled.
"And you knew?"
Cedric looked at me.
"I suspected."
I stood.
"You married me to settle a debt you knew wasn't mine?"
His face tightened.
"Analisa—"
"No."
Tears filled my eyes.
"You don't get to explain this away."
He looked devastated.
I continued.
"You brought me into this house under a lie."
Silence.
May you like
Then Cedric whispered:
"You're right."
