Chapter 8 - The Frozen Cards and the 72,000-Dollar Audit

While the locksmiths drilled out the master deadbolts on the front entrance, Harrison Vance opened his leather briefcase on the dining table.
He placed two certified financial court orders before Julian and Khloe.
“Let’s discuss the financial reckoning,” Harrison said with surgical precision.
The forensic documents were undeniable:
The Bank Freeze: All secondary debit cards issued under Martha Miller’s account were permanently canceled at 6:00 PM today.
The Restitution Demand: A formal civil judgment demanding immediate repayment of $72,000 in diverted allowance funds, backed by emergency liens placed on Julian’s Audi and Khloe’s personal savings.
The Corporate Notification: A formal copy of the elder exploitation indictment hand-delivered to the compliance division of Julian’s employer.
Julian’s phone buzzed violently in his robe pocket.
He pulled it out with trembling fingers. The screen showed an urgent email from the senior partners at his firm:
IMMEDIATE SUSPENSION OF CONSULTING CREDENTIALS PENDING ETHICAL AND LEGAL INQUIRY.
Julian dropped his scotch glass. The crystal shattered across the hardwood floor, dark amber liquor staining the Persian rug.
He fell to his knees on the floorboards, looking up at me with wide, frantic eyes.
“Natalie… please,” Julian choked out, weeping openly. “We have nowhere to go! My accounts are locked! My firm will fire me! Just give us until Monday!”

I looked down at the man who had slammed the door in my face four hours earlier.
“The maid is out back, Julian,” I said softly. “You can go ask her for mercy. Oh wait—she’s at the Four Seasons.”
