Chapter 6 - The Sheriff’s Immediate Eviction Order

Sheriff Marcus Stone stepped out of the patrol cruiser, towering at six-foot-three, wearing his crisp tan uniform, silver star, and Stetson hat.

Beside him walked four armed deputies, Harrison Vance in an immaculate pinstripe suit, and two locksmiths carrying heavy commercial drill rigs.

I stepped out of my car, walking up the driveway flanked by the law.

Julian scrambled down the porch steps, scotch sloshing over his hand. “Officer! What is the meaning of this?! We’re hosting a private dinner party! Who called the police?!”

Sheriff Stone stopped on the first step, unholstering a sealed, gold-embossed legal folio.

“Julian Vance?” Sheriff Stone’s voice boomed across the front lawn.

“Yes! I reside here!”

“You are currently trespassing on private property owned exclusively by Miss Natalie Miller,” Sheriff Stone stated with freezing authority. “Under an Emergency Writ of Re-entry and Immediate Possession issued by the Travis County District Court, you and every occupant inside are ordered to vacate these premises within fifteen minutes.”

Khloe rushed out of the front door in a sparkling cocktail dress, holding a glass of Prosecco, her face pale with terror.

“Officer, wait! That’s my sister! She’s doing this out of spite! We live here! We have rights!”

Harrison Vance stepped forward, adjusting his gold cufflinks.

“You have zero leasehold rights, Mrs. Vance,” Harrison announced loudly, his voice carrying clearly into the foyer where the dinner guests were beginning to crowd near the entrance. “You are classified under Texas law as unauthorized transient squatters. Furthermore, a criminal investigation has been opened against both of you for felony exploitation of a vulnerable elder.”

The word felony hung in the air like an executioner’s axe.
