Chapter 8 - THE MAN WHO HAD NEVER BEEN SAVED

Nicolo couldn't stop thinking about Sofia.

Not because she was beautiful.

Though she was.

Not because she'd saved his life.

Though she had.

But because she treated him like a man rather than a legend.

She corrected him.

Challenged him.

Ignored his reputation.

And refused to accept his money.

One afternoon, he offered to pay for Elena's education.

Sofia stared.

"No."

He frowned.

"Why?"

"Because I didn't ask."

"It's a gift."

"It's leverage."

Nicolo looked offended.

"I wouldn't use it that way."

Sofia studied him.

"Maybe not intentionally."

He looked down.

She continued.

"But I'm not raising my daughter to believe powerful men get to purchase gratitude."

Nicolo was silent.

Then nodded.

"Fair."

He began noticing things.

How Sofia checked exits.

How she flinched when phones rang late at night.

How she relaxed when Elena laughed.

How she never let herself sit with her back to a door.

He recognized those habits.

They were his own.

One evening, they sat in a secure apartment after Elena went to sleep.

Nicolo looked at Sofia.

"Do you ever get tired?"

She laughed softly.

"Constantly."

"Of hiding?"

She nodded.

"Yes."

He hesitated.

"Then why keep doing it?"

Sofia looked toward Elena's bedroom.

"Because she's worth it."

Nicolo followed her gaze.

For the first time, he understood that Sofia's strength wasn't the absence of fear.

It was the willingness to act despite it.

He looked at her.

"You're remarkable."

Sofia smiled faintly.

"I'm exhausted."

He laughed.

"Both can be true."

May you like

She looked at him.

And for the first time, the silence between them felt comfortable.
