Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO FINALLY STOPPED HIDING

Sofia Bellini's identity became public again.
The government confirmed she had survived the operation twelve years earlier.
Her role in the original investigation was reviewed.
Her testimony helped support new prosecutions.
Reporters wanted interviews.
Documentary producers called.
Publishers offered contracts.
Sofia declined most of them.
She didn't want fame.
She wanted a normal life.
She moved into a small house outside Chicago with Elena.
There was a garden.
A porch.
And a kitchen with yellow curtains.
For the first time in years, Sofia used her real name openly.
She began teaching courses on investigative ethics and witness protection.
She also worked with organizations supporting families affected by organized crime.
Nicolo visited occasionally.
At first, he came with flowers.
Sofia laughed.
"You're terrible at this."
He looked offended.
"At what?"
"Being normal."
He smiled.
"I'm practicing."
They began spending time together.
Coffee.
Dinner.
Walks.
Sofia never forgot who Nicolo had been.
She didn't ignore his past.
And she didn't accept excuses.
Nicolo continued cooperating with legal authorities and addressing his own responsibilities.
He stepped away from criminal leadership.
He focused on legitimate businesses.
The process was difficult.
But he kept going.
One evening, Sofia asked:
"Why?"
Nicolo looked at her.
"Why what?"
"Why change?"
He considered.
Then smiled faintly.
"Because I finally met someone who wasn't impressed by the man I used to be."
Sofia laughed.
"That's true."
He nodded.
"And because I don't want to be that man anymore."
She studied him.

Then smiled.
"Good answer."
