Chapter 5 - THE FILE MARKED BLACKBIRD

Sofia Bellini had spent twelve years living under names that weren't hers.
She'd been a hotel clerk.
A translator.
A receptionist.
A waitress.
And before that, she'd been one of the most effective undercover investigators in federal law enforcement.
Her work had helped dismantle the Varga network.
Sixty-seven arrests.
Dozens of witnesses protected.
Millions in illegal assets seized.
But the operation had come at a cost.
Her partner had been killed.
Her identity compromised.
And someone had placed a price on her life.
The government arranged for her to disappear.
Her death was announced.
Her records were sealed.
And Sofia Bellini became Sophia Russo.
A woman who apologized too much.
Spilled coffee.
Forgot orders.
And never looked anyone directly in the eyes.
Nicolo listened as she explained.
"Why my café?"
Sofia looked at him.
"Because Marco was using it to exchange information."
He frowned.
"You could have arrested him."
"We needed evidence connecting him to the people financing the operation."
Nicolo leaned back.
"And I was bait."
Sofia hesitated.
"Partly."
He stared.
She continued.
"I didn't expect the attack."
Nicolo looked toward the window.
"Neither did I."
For several minutes, neither spoke.
Then he asked:
"Why did you save me?"
Sofia looked surprised.
"What?"
"You were investigating my family. You knew who I was."
She nodded.
"Yes."
"Then why risk your life?"
Sofia studied him.
"Because you were about to be murdered."
Nicolo frowned.
"That's it?"
"That's enough."
He looked away.
He'd spent twenty years believing every action had a price.
Every favor required repayment.
Every kindness concealed a motive.
Sofia had saved him because he was human.
The simplicity unsettled him.
That evening, Nicolo received a message.
An unfamiliar number.
One photograph.
Marco standing beside a man Nicolo recognized immediately.
Viktor Varga.
The supposed dead leader of the criminal network Sofia had helped dismantle.
