I knew the industry.
The long hours.
The impossible customers.
The managers who confused authority with cruelty.

I wanted to create a place where employees were treated with dignity.
Where customers didn't have to be wealthy to feel welcome.
And where nobody was punished for telling the truth.
Dante offered to fund the entire project.

I smiled.
“Dante.”
“I can help.”
“I know.”
“Then why won't you let me?”
I took his hand.

Then nodded.
“All right.”
I smiled.
“But you can help me taste-test the menu.”
His mouth curved.
“That sounds dangerous.”
“Very.”
He laughed.
And I realized something important.
I wasn't afraid of disappointing him anymore.
I could disagree.
Say no.
Make decisions.
May you like
And he respected them.
That mattered more than any expensive gift.
