Chapter 14 - THE FAMILY WE BUILT

Three years later, Murphy's Table had expanded to two locations.
I was thirty.
Dante was thirty-eight.
And our daughter, Sofia, had just turned one.
She had his dark eyes.
My stubbornness.
And a laugh that made everyone in the room stop what they were doing.
Dante adored her.
Completely.
Ridiculously.
He learned to change diapers.
Read bedtime stories.
And make pancakes shaped like animals.
The pancakes were terrible.
Sofia loved them anyway.
One morning, I found him sitting on the kitchen floor with our daughter.
She was holding a wooden spoon.
He was pretending to be a dragon.
I stood in the doorway.
The man who had once terrified entire rooms was crawling across the floor making ridiculous roaring sounds.
Sofia squealed.
I laughed.
Dante looked up.
“Don't.”
I grinned.
“Don't what?”
“Tell anyone.”
I smiled.
“Too late.”
He groaned.

I took a picture.
And saved it forever.
