Chapter 6 - THE CAMERA ABOVE THE REGISTER

Dante didn't send men to threaten Tommy.

He hired an attorney.

A woman named Rebecca Sloan.

She was sharp, practical, and entirely unimpressed by Dante's reputation.

When I met her, she asked one question.

“Do you want your job back, or do you want your wages and your name cleared?”

I thought about Tommy's face.

The humiliation.

The missing money.

Then answered:

“My name cleared.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Good.”

She requested payroll records, register reports, and surveillance footage through the appropriate legal process.

Tommy refused.

Then changed his story.

Then claimed the cameras had malfunctioned.

Rebecca smiled when she heard that.

Not a friendly smile.

A lawyer's smile.

Two weeks later, the diner agreed to preserve and provide the relevant footage.

And the truth emerged.

Tommy had been removing cash from the register after closing.

He altered the reports to make it appear that employees were responsible.

Not just me.

Three other waitresses.

Marcus had suspected something for months.

But he'd been afraid to speak.

When the evidence became clear, the diner owners terminated Tommy and referred the matter to authorities.

Rebecca helped the affected employees pursue their unpaid wages and deductions.

I received a settlement.

Not a fortune.

But enough to pay rent and breathe.

When I told Dante, he smiled.

“Good.”

I studied him.

“You really didn't threaten anyone?”

He looked offended.

“Murphy.”

I raised an eyebrow.

He sighed.

“No.”

I smiled.

“Thank you.”

He shook his head.

“Don't thank me for doing what you asked.”

I looked at him.

“Most people don't.”

May you like

His expression softened.

“Then you've been surrounded by the wrong people.”
