Chapter 9 - SARAH AND EVELYN

Sarah went no-contact with Evelyn for almost a year.

Not punishment.

Safety.

Evelyn had violated the most basic rule of grandparenthood:

She made access to Lily dependent on concealment.

She also made Lily believe Sarah’s safety depended on obedience.

That could not be repaired by tears.

Evelyn entered therapy.

Sold the guest cottage furniture she had moved in.

Relocated to a condo forty minutes away.

She did not appear at our gate.

Did not send gifts through staff.

Did not recruit relatives.

For once, she obeyed a boundary.

Ten months later, Sarah received a letter.

Not:

I did it because I loved you.

Not:

You’ll understand when you’re older.

Instead:

I taught Lily that protecting me mattered more than telling you the truth. That was wrong.

Then:

I used your daughter because I was afraid of losing control over what happened when you learned the truth.

And:

I am sorry without expecting access in return.

Sarah read it three times.

Then put it away.

Three months later, she agreed to meet her mother with a therapist present.

No Lily.

May you like

That came much later.
