Chapter 4 - WHAT GRANDMA WAS ASKING LILY

Lily began seeing a child therapist.

Not because we thought she was damaged beyond repair.

Because adults had loaded her with secrets she should never have carried.

Within two sessions, we learned the secret visits had happened seven times.

Mostly while I traveled.

Sometimes while Sarah worked long hospital shifts.

Evelyn told us she was taking Lily:

To lunch.

To a craft store.

To a botanical garden.

Instead, some outings ended at the industrial building.

Charles gave Lily:

Books.

A stuffed rabbit.

A little silver bracelet Sarah had owned as a child.

Nothing inherently sinister.

But Evelyn also asked questions.

“Does Mommy keep papers in the blue cabinet?”

“Does Daddy talk about Chicago at dinner?”

“Is Mommy mad when Grandpa’s name comes up?”

“Does Daddy have people looking through old company records?”

Lily did not understand what any of it meant.

That made it worse.

They were using a child as an information source.

I asked Charles directly.

“Did you authorize those questions?”

“No.”

Evelyn looked down.

He continued:

“I told Evelyn not to involve Lily in business.”

“Yet you kept accepting the visits.”

“Yes.”

“So you benefited from the secrecy.”

“Yes.”

Good.

No heroic dead grandfather.

He knew enough to know it was wrong.

Then Lily’s therapist gave us a rule we kept afterward:

Surprises have endings. Secrets that make children scared get told.

Birthday present?

Surprise.

Mother’s Day breakfast?

Surprise.

An adult telling a child not to tell parents where they go?

Not a surprise.

Tell.

An adult saying someone will get hurt if the child speaks?

Tell immediately.

Sarah wrote the rule on a card and taped it inside Lily’s closet.

Lily added a panda sticker.

That was how healing began.

Not with arrests.

May you like

Language.
