Chapter 6 - THE WIFE I ALMOST DOUBTED

For several days, I had one terrible question.

Did Sarah know anything?

Not about Charles being alive.

Her reaction made that nearly impossible.

But about the money?

The trust?

The irregularities?

I hated myself for wondering.

Still, marriage does not excuse abandoning reason.

So I asked.

Directly.

We sat in our bedroom after Lily fell asleep.

“Sarah.”

“Yes?”

“I need to ask something that may hurt.”

She looked at me.

“Ask.”

“Did you ever know the inheritance was questionable?”

Her face changed.

“No.”

“Did you ever see anything about Harbor Crown?”

“No.”

“Did your mother ever ask you to sign trust documents without reading them?”

She thought.

“Years ago.”

My chest tightened.

“What?”

“After Dad was declared dead.”

“What did you sign?”

“I don’t know.”

That answer frightened her too.

We obtained the records.

Sarah had signed:

Receipts.

Beneficiary acknowledgments.

A tax election.

And one trustee consent.

Nothing indicating knowledge Charles was alive.

Nothing releasing fraud claims.

Nothing suspicious on its face.

Good.

But Sarah still cried.

“I should have read everything.”

“You were grieving.”

“That isn’t an excuse.”

“No.”

“It’s context.”

She stared at me.

Then:

“Do you trust me?”

“Yes.”

The answer came immediately.

“Then why did you ask?”

“Because trust isn’t pretending questions don’t exist.”

Silence.

Then she nodded.

“Good answer.”

That was one of the strangest gifts the crisis gave our marriage.

We stopped treating questions as accusations.

Evelyn had built an entire secret life because she believed love required protecting people from truth.

Sarah and I decided the opposite.

If a question mattered, ask it.

If the answer hurt, deal with the hurt.

May you like

No secret places.
