Chapter 7 - EVELYN’S REAL REASON

Evelyn eventually told the full truth through counsel.
She had helped Charles stage his disappearance.
She lied to investigators about their last conversation.
She accepted insurance proceeds.
She concealed later contact.
Then remarried Martin Avery four years afterward.
Did Martin know?
Apparently not.
That detail devastated Sarah.
Martin had been kind.
He attended Lily’s preschool recital.
Built the treehouse behind our guest cottage.
Sat beside Sarah on Father’s Day when she cried over Charles.
He had comforted her for a grief Evelyn knew was partly manufactured.
After Martin died, Evelyn returned to Charles emotionally almost immediately.
Not because they had maintained a romantic relationship the entire time.
They hadn’t.
Because shared secrets create their own form of intimacy.
Then came the ugliest part.
Evelyn had started bringing Lily to Charles partly because she feared Sarah would choose me over her family once the truth surfaced.
She told her attorney:
“Graham has always had too much influence over Sarah.”
I laughed when I heard that.
Sarah did not.
She said:
“She means I make decisions she can’t control.”
Probably.
Evelyn believed if Lily became attached to Charles, Sarah would be forced to preserve some version of the family.
It was the same mistake in a new form.
