Chapter 6 - ARTHUR’S FAILURE

Arthur was not innocent.

Not criminally.

But morally?

Clara confronted him.

“You ignored too much.”

He looked at her.

“I know.”

“No.”

Her voice hardened.

“You say that because saying it makes you sound accountable.”

He flinched.

Good.

Clara continued.

“Victoria insulted staff constantly.”

“Yes.”

“She punished people for speaking to Leo without permission.”

“Yes.”

“Your mother controlled his schedule.”

“Yes.”

“You knew.”

“I knew they were difficult.”

“You called it difficult because the word cruel would have required action.”

Silence.

Arthur sat.

That was the first time Clara saw him not as billionaire father.

Just a man.

A weak one in important places.

He said:

“I wanted peace.”

Clara almost laughed.

“Peace for who?”

He had no answer.

Exactly.

Arthur’s peace had been purchased by everyone beneath him.

Staff.

Clara.

Eventually Leo.

He whispered:

“I failed him.”

“Yes.”

No comforting.

Then:

“What do I do?”

Clara shook her head.

“That’s not my job.”

Important.

Saving Leo did not make her Arthur’s moral guide.

He would need therapists.

Attorneys.

Parenting work.

His own choices.

Clara was done carrying other people’s growth.

---

Leo recovered slowly.

Nightmares.

Fear of closed doors.

Panic when alarms sounded.

Arthur moved out of the main estate and into a smaller family residence during reconstruction.

Leo asked one question repeatedly:

“Is Clara coming?”

Arthur always answered:

“If she wants to.”

Good.

Not entitlement.

Clara visited twice a week.

Then three.

Not as employee.

She refused wages.

Instead, she read to him.

Played cards.

Let him talk about fire when he wanted.

Let him talk about dinosaurs when he didn’t.

Healing needed ordinary subjects.
