Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN WHO CALLED MURDER “FAMILY DUTY”

Victoria requested an attorney.
Then silence.
Evelyn was arrested two days later after attempting to transfer money through an offshore account.
The family scandal exploded.
News trucks lined the road outside the hospital.
Clara became:
THE HERO MAID WHO SAVED BILLIONAIRE HEIR
She hated it.
Because the word maid was always written as though it made the rescue more surprising.
As though courage was unexpected from someone who cleaned bathrooms.
Arthur offered her money.
She refused.
He offered a house.
She refused.
He offered private security.
That one she accepted.
Practical.
Then he did something smarter.
He asked:
“What do you want?”
Clara did not answer immediately.
Finally:
“I want my mother’s name cleared.”
Arthur nodded.
Done.
Not quietly.
Publicly.
Ashbourne Family Trust issued a formal statement acknowledging that Margaret Bennett had been falsely accused and that recovered records showed the allegation was fabricated.
The estate paid compensation into Margaret’s estate.
Clara cried when she read the statement.
Not because money.
Because her mother spent fifteen years believing powerful people could erase truth forever.
They had not.
It had simply taken too long to surface.
---
Victoria eventually cooperated partially.
Her account was horrifying because she did not think of herself as cruel.
She thought of herself as practical.
Evelyn’s loan was coming due.
If the trust shifted, they could refinance.
If Leo remained beneficiary, they lost everything.
Victoria insisted the plan was Evelyn’s.
She said the original intention was to sedate Leo, remove him, and stage a kidnapping during the fire.
But then security changed unexpectedly.
The hired driver never arrived.
The fire spread too fast.
Evelyn panicked.
Locked Leo in his room.
Victoria claimed she tried to return.
Nobody believed that automatically.
Evidence showed her entering the east corridor.
But what did she do?
A recovered text answered.
Victoria to Evelyn:
The maid is looking for him. Stop her.
Evelyn:
Let the smoke handle both.
Clara stared at the screen.
They intended her to die too.
Arthur read it once.
May you like
Then left the room and vomited.
